Crusaders take title in controversial playoff Sometimes life in the goal crease can get a little crowded as it did in the WOAA Grand Championship game between Brussels and Lion’s Head in Wingham Saturday night. A Brussels forward and a Lion’s Head defenceman join the Lion’s Head goalie in the net. The Brussels Crusaders captur ed the W.O.A.A. Intermediate Grand Championship by edging the Lion’s Head North Stars 4 to3 in the fifth and deciding game of the series. Before a full house at the Wingham arena, Saturday night, both teams came out skating and hitting. Unlike the Friday night game when the North Stars tried to intimidate the Crusaders, the Brussels’ boys served notice that they were out to win by throwing some hard checks. Lion’s Head opened the scoring seven minutes into the game when Crusader goalie Ron Smith was beaten by a screen shot. Two minutes later Ken Higgins’ slap shot from the point tied the game. In the first period the Crusaders outshot Lions Head 8 to 6. Midway through the second period Brian Ten Pas converted passes from Ken Cousins and Dave Stephenson to give the Crusaders a 2 to 1 lead. This goal sparked the Crusaders and they took the game to Lions Head for much of the second period. Ken Cousins scored a power play goalwithlessthanfour minutes remaining in the period to give the Crusaders a two goal lead. How ever, two minutes later the North Stars scored as the Crusaders had difficulty clearing the puck out of their zone. During the second period the Crusaders outshot the North Stars 13 to 7. Several key saves by Steve Liverance and bad luck around the net kept the Crusaders from upping their lead. Both teams came out flying in the third period. With eight and a half minutes left in the game, Brian Ten Pas scored his second goal of the game to give the Crusaders a two-goal lead. With three minutes remaining, Lion’s Head scored to cut the Crusaderleadto4-3. This led to several tense moments as Lion’s Head swarmed the Brussels zone Dave J acobi of the W U AA presents the Grand Championship trophy to a jubilant Brian .Ten Pas, captain of the Brussels Crusaders after Brussels won the deciding game of the series 4-3 Saturday night. trying to get the equalizer. However, goalie Ron Smith, who played brilliantly throughout the play-offs, made several key saves to preserve the victory. During the period the North Stars outshot Brussels 13 to 12. Special mention goes to defence man Mike Watson who led the Crusader defense, handing out several solid checks and spear heading several dangerous rush es. Referee Harvey Black should also be congratulated for his excellent job; his consistent calls kept the game under control and allowed the players to stick to hockey. On Friday night the Crusaders lost a heartbreaker when Lion’s Head scored a powerplay goal with 29 seconds remaining to give them a 5 to 4 victory. In the first periocf Lion’s Head completely dominated the game.
