Crusaders tie Grand championship series Displaying a lot of grit and self-discipline the Brussels Crusa ders fought back to tie the W.O.A.A. Grand Championship best of five final at a game apiece. Using an intimidating style of hockey the Lions Head North Stars opened the scoring with a power play goal midway through the first period. Great goaltending by Ron Smith kept the Crusaders in the game during the first period as he faced many hard shots. Twenty-two seconds into the second period Lions Head jumped into a 2 to 0 lead when the Crusaders got caught on a 3 on 1. However the Crusaders got their game going at this point and scored 5 unanswered goals. Team captain Brian Ten Pas went on a tear, scoring four of these goals while linemate Dave Montgomery notch ed the other. Late in the second period Lions Head scored twice to Brussels Crusaders took time before the celebration of their WOAA Intermediate “A” championship last week for a picture. In the third period Lions Head continued their intimidation tac tics using their sticks to try to slow down the fast skating Crusaders. Brutal slashes became the order of the period for Lions Head. Finally, two Lions Head players jumped Crusader Troy Pocaluyko. As the ejected players tried to get off the ice Lions Head fans tried to get involved however the O.P.P. and a few loyal Crusader fans were able to restore order and get the players to the dressing room area. In the midst of all this chaos Crusader Kevin Deitner scored to increase the Crusaders lead to 6 to 4. After this the Crusaders resort ed to a defensive style of hockey to preserve their 6 to4 lead which was made easier as Lions Head contin ued to take penalties. The first game of the series was a slow moving affair especially by the Crusaders as they appeared to be flat after their victory over Kincardine. In a somewhat boring first period Lions Head opened the scoring just over half-way through the period. Rob Cardiff one of the few Crusaders who came to play tied the score with five minutes left in the period. In the second period the Crusa ders appeared to get their act together as they started to take the game to Lions Head. Rob Cardiff scoring his second goal of the game gave the Crusaders a 2 to 1 goal to increase the Crusaders lead. How ever a powerplay goal by Lions Head late in the period cut the Crusaders lead to a goal. In the third the Crusaders slipped back to their first period lucklustre play. Midway through the period Lions Head tied the score notching a shorthanded goal. With five minutes left in the game Lions Head scored to take the lead. With less than a minute left the Crusaders pulled goalie Mike Smith however the move backfired as Lions Head scored into the empty net to get them a 5 to 3 victory. Due to problems with the ice machine the ice was taken out of Brussels so the Crusaders will now play their home games in Wing ham.
