The Bulls travelled to Exeter on
Thursday night for the third game
in the northern championship
final.
Exeter opened the scoring just
30 seconds into the game. It took
almost another three minutes of
play before the Bulls’ Mike
Chapman came through assisted
by Tim Fritz to even the score.
The Hawks scored the go-ahead
goal at the 15:29 mark to take the
lead and hold it to the end of the
period.
Brussels came back at 1:21 into
the second period when Tim Fritz
scored from Ron Strome and Mike
Chapman for a power play goal and
tied the score once more. The tie
was short lived as Exeter went
ahead at 3:44 and added a second
quick goal at the 5:30 mark to lead
by two.
Bill Kerr scored from Kevin Lee
at 9:19 to bring the Bulls one goal
closer. The remaining 10 minutes
of the period was scoreless.
The Bulls’ struck early in the
third when Tim Fritz scored from
Greg Crummer and Bill Haines for
a power play goal and evened the
score at four.
It seemed the Bulls just couldn’t
hold on as Exeter went ahead at
1:44 and then scored again off the
next face-off at 1:55 to get a quick
two-goal lead.
Tim Fritz combined with Ron
Strome and Mike Chapman to
score again at 2:36. The two teams
battled away for the remainder of
the 20 minutes and were unable to
score. Then with just nine seconds
left on the clock, the goalie had
been pulled once more and the
Hawkswere allowed toscore an
empty net goal to put the game out
of reach for the Bulls.
The two teams returned to
Brussels on Easter Sunday with the
Bulls in a do-or-die situation.
They played their usual brand of
up-and-down the ice hockey with
opportunities missed by both
teams.
Brussels opened the scoring at
5:21 of the first period when Kevin
McArter scored a power play goal
from Tim Fritz.
They had played 10:15 of period
when the Hawks scored to even the
game. The remainder of the first
period was scoreless.
They had played 12:19 of the
second period when the Bulls’ Bill
Kerr scored from Tim Fritz and
Paul Edwards to put Brussels
ahead.
There was only 1:56 left on the
clock when Exeter capitalized in a
power play to tie the score at two
and end the second 20 minutes of
play still even.
The third period continued with
shots on net even for both teams
but nobody was breaking through.
Brussels was playing short-hand
ed when an illegal stick call was
made at 9:51 and the Bulls ended
up two men short. The Hawks
scored two power-play goals at
9:26 and 9:07 to take a two-goal
lead.
The Bulls failed to score any
more goals and the Hawks claimed
the series in four games straight.
They will now go on to meet the
winner of the Tavistock-Lambeth
series for the Junior “D” cham
pionship.
Thanks Bulls for a good season.
You provided us with some very
good hockey. The executive made
two $50 lottery draws with the
lucky winners being Murray Pipe
and Brian and Dianne Huether, all
of Brussels. Thelucky winner of
the 50/50 draw was Laura Parker of
Brussels with a jackpot of $80.
