Midgets eliminated in All-Ontario final Muncey captain and star player Larry Hill has Blyth’s Michael Henry at his mercy as he sweeps in for another goal in the final game of the All-Ontario Midget E championship series in Blyth Friday. A huge crowd saw the Blyth team put up a valiant effort against a bigger and faster Muncey squad but lose the championship tn three straight games. The Blyth Legion Midgets fin­ ished their season in a week filled with disappointment as a very strong Muncey team beat the Blyth boys three games straight. On Monday night Blyth faced off against Muncey at home. The local boys skated toa 8 - 2 loss. The team from Muncey was strong, fast and very determined to win. The first Blyth goal was scored by Larry Hunking with assists going to Keith Verburg and Drew Allen. Keith Verburg scored the se­ cond goal for Blyth on a solo effort. Blyth Atoms lose WOAA title to Clinton BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms finished their season last Wednesday, March 30 as they hosted Clinton in the W.O.A.A. Group championship game. Although Blyth came up on the short end of the scoreboard they gave an excellent account of themselves as they lost 6-3. Clinton hit the scoreboard first but Blyth scored the only goal of the second frame as the game was deadlocked 1-1 after two periods. Jerrod Button scored as he pounc­ ed on a loose puck at the corner of the crease with assists from Henry Bos and James McNichol. Clinton scored two early third period goals before Blyth counter­ ed with one of their own. Peter Craig slid a long shot from the point into the corner of the net after being set up thanks to some strong forechecking by Henry Bos. Clin­ ton once again took a two-goal lead before Blyth narrowed the score to 4-3 with a little over one minute left in the game. Blyth’s leading sniper, Michael Bromley, scored their final goal of the season on a backhand shot with assists from Ryan Chamney and Peter Craig. All the coaches in Minor Hockey, deserve credit for all the time and devotion they have given over the past months; and to our coaches, Chris Cowan, John Blok and Bruce Schmidt, a very sincere “Thank- You” is ex tended from the boys and their parents for the excellent coaching of the past season. This was a penalty-filled game with Blyth receiving 42 minutes and Muncey receiving 60 minutes in penalties. On Wednesday night both teams met again. The Blyth boys were encouraged by a large contingent of fans who travelled with the team to watch the game. The local boys came out to avenge their earlier loss. Muncey scored firstbut Blyth came back quickly and Larry Hunking scored assisted by Dan McDougall. A small let-down by Blyth allowed scored an insurance goal with only 27 seconds left. Blyth pulled their goalie for one more offensive rush but Clinton scored an empty net goal to salt away the game 6-3. A long and sometimes hectic season ended with the final buzzer as the Atoms proved worthy opponents as they ended up as Group runners up. It was a very enjoyable and successful season at the Blyth arena as all of the teams proved quite competitive this year. It was very nice to see all the people come out and support this team. We would also I ike to thank the parents for their support. Special thanks also is extended to the Legion for the sweaters and socks. Muncey to score three quick goals before Paul Hoggart put the puck in for Blyth. Kriss Snell and Allen Hillis assisted this goal. After one period of play Muncey was ahead by a score of 4-2. Early in the second period Muncey scored once more before Blyth mounted a come-back of their own. Larry Hunking scored assisted by Dan McDougall. Paul Hoggart scored once more, assist­ ed by Allen Hillis and Dean Whitfield. Dan McDougall then scored assisted by Larry Hunking and Keith Verburg. Muncey scor­ ed once more to close the second period with a 6-5 advantage. Muncey scored twice early in the third period to gain a three goal advantage before Kriss Snell scored for Blyth. Dean Whitfield and Paul Hoggart assisted on this goal .This closed the scoring for the game as the Blyth boys were unable to get the puck past the Muncey goalie. This game was clean and well played as the officials took charge early in the game and both teams played an excellent came of hockey. On April 1 both teams met once more for game three of the series. Both teams came out fast and hard. Muncey was able to score four goals as they resorted to their game of intimidation. The Blyth boys could not keep up to the Muncey team and injuries slowed them down. With 2:46 left in the second period, Allen Hillis scored for Blyth, assisted by Paul Hoggart.
