Brian Ten Pas scored a shorthanded goal to increase the Crusader lead to 3-0. Kincardine outshot Brussels 9 to 4 in the period. In the third period the Crusaders appeared to let up and Kincardine jumped at the opportunity. Within a four-minute span they scored three times to tie the game. However Crusader Kevin Deitner scored a powerplay goal to restore the Crusaders lead. Withthreeanda half minutes remaining the Kings persistent pressure paid off as they tied the score. However, the Crusaders high flying line of Ten Pas, Pocaluyko and Montgomery came right back to give the Crusaders a 5 to 4 lead when Troy circled the net and tucked the puck into the open corner of the net. In the final two and a half minutes the Crusader’s penalty killing units held the Kings at bay to preserve the Crusaders victory. During the game the Kings outshot the Crusaders 29 to 26. The Crusaders will now play Lions Head for the W.O.A.A. Grand Championship which will likely start next weekend. Hard-checking Kevin Deitner of the Brussels Crusaders upsets a Kincardine defenceman in the dying minutes of the deciding game of the WOAA Intermediate championship series in Brussels Sunday night. Deitner was called for tripping adding to the excitement as Brussels had to play short-handed. The teams took turns scoring in the last few minutes of the exciting game played before a full house at the Brussels, Morris and Grey arena. Biyth Tigers finish season The Brussels Crusaders captur­ ed the W.O.A.A. Intermediate “A” Championship with a thrill­ ing, suspense-filled 8-7 victory Sunday night. Played before a fullhouse the game kept most of the fans on the edge of their seats as both teams played a never-give-up brand of hockey. In the first period the Crusader’s jumped into a 3 to 1 lead as they came out flying. Troy Pocaluyko opened the scoring three-and-a- half minutes into the game when he notched a powerplay goal. Kincar­ dine tied the score with a power­ play goal of their own with a little over six minutes remaining in the period. Kevin Deitner intercepted an errant clearing pass and blasted a shot past a startled King’s goalie to give the Crusaders a 2 -1 lead. A minute later Rob Cardiff scored in a goalmouth scramble to give the Crusaders a 3 to 1 lead. During the period the Crusaders outshot the King’s 12 to 6. Afired-up Kincardine team took to the ice in the second period. Their hard work and some costly Crusaders pentalities allowed them to take a 4 to 3 lead. The Kings outshot the Crusaders 9 to 7 in the period. With the whole season on the line the Crusaders proved they weren ’ t quitters as they dominated much of the final period. Two minutes into the period Randy Clarke tapped the puck into the open side of the net to tie the score. Two minutes later Troy Pocaluyko slid the puck under the Kings goalie to give the Crusaders a 5 - 4 lead. The Kings bounced back three minutes later to tie the score. With just over 7 minutes left in the game BrianTen Pas restored the Cru­ saders lead. Two minutes later Dave Montgomery gave the Cru­ saders a two goal lead when he scored a powerplay marker. With less than five minutes remaining it appeared as if the Crusaders had the championship locked up with their two goal lead. However with just over three minutes remaining the Kings scored on a powerplay to get right back in the game. Twenty-six seconds later the Kings tied the score when a deflected clearing pass went to an unguarded King forward in front of the Brussels goal. However the Crusaders struck back eighteen seconds later when Captain Brian Ten Pas scored. This time the Crusaders held off a determined Kincardine team to capture the title. The Crusaders outshot the Kings 15 to8 in the third period. Game six played in Kincardine on Saturday night was another thrilling contest. With a three games to two lead in the series the Crusaders were hoping to capture the title and avoid a seventh and deciding game. The Crusaders started quickly and controlled the play for much of the first period. Brian Ten Pas’ screen shot from the point gave the Crusaders an early lead. The Kings tied the score two minutes later. The Kings’ goalie Ron Martin played outstanding the rest of the period as he stopped many danger­ ous shots. In the second period the Kings came out flying but Crusader goalie Ron Smith was equal to the task as he turned away 15 Kincardine shots. A few fans remained in the arena for the celebration of the hundreds who jammed the building for the heart-stopping action. Brussels will now play Lions Head beginning Friday in Brussels at 9, then Saturday in Lions Head and Sunday at 3 in Brussels. A fan bus will be leaving for Lions Head Saturday. Those wishing to go should sign at JR’s by Friday. scored midway through the period to give the Crusaders a 2 to 1 lead. Thirty-five seconds into the third period Kevin Deitner notched a powerplay goal to up the Crusader lead to 4-1. The way things were going it looked as if the Crusaders had the title won. However Kincardine wasn’t ready to give up. The Kings came right back to score three goals in five minutes to tie the game. In the final 13 minutes of the period both goalies made several key saves and the game went into overtime. Overtime games haven’t been good to the Crusaders as they had already lost two earlier overtime games. This game was to be no exception. Both teams came out flying and determined to get the game winner. However a minute and a half into the period the Crusaders got caught on a line change and the Kings broke out on a 3 on 2. The Kings made no mistake and scored to force a seventh and deciding game. Dur­ ing the game each team had 39 shots on goal. On Friday night the fifth game of the series was played in Brussels. After their 4 to 3 win in Kincardine on the previous night which tied the seriesattwogameseach the Crusaders were determined to keep their momentum going. Kevin Deitner scored a power­ play goal four minutes into the period to give the Crusaders the lead. With six minutes left in the period Brian Ten Pas scored to give the Crusaders a 2 to 0 advantage. The Crusaders outshot Kincardine 13 to 7 in the period. During the second period the Crusaders got into penalty pro­ blems and allowed the Kings to take control of the game. However good penalty killing and great goaltending by Ron Smith held the B Y B J AND THE TIGERS The Blyth Novice Tigers hosted a game against Clifford March 27. Shane Burkholder was goaltender. Jeff Cowan scored Blyth’s first goal right off the face-off, moments into the game. The first goal for Clifford was in the second period, accidently put in the Tigers net by a Blyth player. Clifford netted two more goals in the third period. The final score was 3-1 for Clifford. The wrap-up game of the season for the Tigers was played against the boys ’ fathers March 30. It was enjoyed by the boys and fans as well. One fan got so carried away she grabbed her husband and held him against the boards so he couldn’t foil a break-away by the Tigers. It was all in fun. The closeness and comradeship among the boys, coaches and parents was felt in this last game. Continued on page 18
