and tucked the puck into the open

Hard-checking Kevin Deitner of the Brussels Crusaders upsets a
Kincardine defenceman in the dying minutes of the deciding game of
the WOAA Intermediate championship series in Brussels Sunday
night. Deitner was called for tripping adding to the excitement as
Brussels had to play short-handed. The teams took turns scoring in the
last few minutes of the exciting game played before a full house at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey arena.

“A” Championship with a thrill

Sunday night.
Played before a fullhouse the
game kept most of the fans on the
edge of their seats as both teams
played a never-give-up brand of
hockey.
In the first period the Crusader’s
jumped into a 3 to 1 lead as they
came out flying. Troy Pocaluyko
opened the scoring three-and-a-
half minutes into the game when he
notched a powerplay goal. Kincar
dine tied the score with a power
play goal of their own with a little
over six minutes remaining in the
period. Kevin Deitner intercepted
an errant clearing pass and blasted
a shot past a startled King’s goalie
to give the Crusaders a 2 -1 lead. A
minute later Rob Cardiff scored in a
goalmouth scramble to give the
Crusaders a 3 to 1 lead. During the
period the Crusaders outshot the
King’s 12 to 6.
Afired-up Kincardine team took
to the ice in the second period.
Their hard work and some costly
Crusaders pentalities allowed
them to take a 4 to 3 lead. The Kings
outshot the Crusaders 9 to 7 in the
period.
With the whole season on the
line the Crusaders proved they
weren ’ t quitters as they dominated
much of the final period. Two
minutes into the period Randy
Clarke tapped the puck into the
open side of the net to tie the score.
Two minutes later Troy Pocaluyko
slid the puck under the Kings
goalie to give the Crusaders a 5 - 4
lead.
The Kings bounced back three
minutes later to tie the score. With
just over 7 minutes left in the game
BrianTen Pas restored the Cru
saders lead. Two minutes later
Dave Montgomery gave the Cru
saders a two goal lead when he
scored a powerplay marker.
With less than five minutes
remaining it appeared as if the
Crusaders had the championship
locked up with their two goal lead.
However with just over three
minutes remaining the Kings
scored on a powerplay to get right
back in the game. Twenty-six
seconds later the Kings tied the
score when a deflected clearing
pass went to an unguarded King
forward in front of the Brussels
goal. However the Crusaders
struck back eighteen seconds later
when Captain Brian Ten Pas
scored. This time the Crusaders
held off a determined Kincardine
team to capture the title. The
Crusaders outshot the Kings 15 to8
in the third period.
Game six played in Kincardine
on Saturday night was another
thrilling contest. With a three
games to two lead in the series the
Crusaders were hoping to capture
the title and avoid a seventh and
deciding game.
The Crusaders started quickly
and controlled the play for much of
the first period. Brian Ten Pas’
screen shot from the point gave the
Crusaders an early lead. The Kings
tied the score two minutes later.
The Kings’ goalie Ron Martin
played outstanding the rest of the
period as he stopped many danger
ous shots.
In the second period the Kings
came out flying but Crusader
goalie Ron Smith was equal to the
task as he turned away 15
Kincardine shots. Kevin Deitner
Crusaders Captain Brian Ten Pas bolds the WOAA Intermediate A

going it looked as if the Crusaders
had the title won. However
Kincardine wasn’t ready to give
up. The Kings came right back to
score three goals in five minutes to
tie the game. In the final 13
minutes of the period both goalies
made several key saves and the
game went into overtime.
Overtime games haven’t been
good to the Crusaders as they had
already lost two earlier overtime
games. This game was to be no
exception. Both teams came out
flying and determined to get the
game winner. However a minute
and a half into the period the
Crusaders got caught on a line
change and the Kings broke out on
a 3 on 2. The Kings made no
mistake and scored to force a
seventh and deciding game. Dur
ing the game each team had 39
shots on goal.

B Y B J AND THE TIGERS
The Blyth Novice Tigers hosted a
game against Clifford March 27.
Shane Burkholder was goaltender.
Jeff Cowan scored Blyth’s first
goal right off the face-off, moments
into the game.
The first goal for Clifford was in
the second period, accidently put
in the Tigers net by a Blyth player.
Clifford netted two more goals in
the third period. The final score
was 3-1 for Clifford.
The wrap-up game of the
season for the Tigers was played
against the boys ’ fathers March 30.
It was enjoyed by the boys and fans
as well.
One fan got so carried away she
grabbed her husband and held him
against the boards so he couldn’t
foil a break-away by the Tigers. It
was all in fun.
The closeness and comradeship
among the boys, coaches and
parents was felt in this last game.
