Co-operative development project proposed
A team of students from the
University of Waterloo’s Planning
School proposed last week that
central Huron municipalities co
operate in a joint development to
try to attract new jobs to the area.
The nine students who made up
the team presented their plan
Wednesday night in Clinton to
political leaders from Blyth, Clin
ton, Seaforth and the townships of
Hullett, McKillop, Stanley and
Tuckersmith. The third year stu
dents are part of a workshop
program at the university conduct
ed by Huron County Planning
Director Dr. Gary Davidson. Four
groups broke Huron county into
north, south, lakeshore and central
economic areas and each of the
groupswasassignedtocome up
with a plan to help their region
develop.
The students unveiled the Cen
tral Huron Community Develop
ment Committee (CHCDA) which
would bring together a committee
of elected and appointed represen
tatives from the seven municipali
ties. The aim of the development
area would be to co-ordinate
activities of the municipalities and
promote long-term planning and
promote civic pride in the area.
The seven communities are too
small to promote themselves in
dividually, the study group said.
They recommended hiring of a

members of the tour at some point.
“If some really terrific oppor
tunity presents itself, we will do
our best to incorporate it into the
tour, but the more advanced the
planning becomes, the more diffi
cult this will be,’’ Mr. Caldwell
said. “Our main concern is that we
all get together and make sure that
He noted that it was fairly
unlikely that any investment op
portunities would be acted upon at
the time of their presentation, but
said thatthe overall impression
made by the municipality could
have “long-range repercussions
for all of us.’’
Each of the participants selected
for the Opportunity Tour has
indicated to the ministry that he or
she would be willing to relocate to
Canada, and thatheor she has a
minimum of $250,000 for invest
ment purposes in this country.
The next meeting of the Tour’s
planning committee will be held in
Goderich on May 16.

the entire group leaves Huron with
