Crusaders rebound over Kincardine 8-2 Brussels Crusaders zero in on a Kincardine Kings puck carrier during the third game of their W.O.A. A. Intermediate “A” championship Sunday. Brussels got off to a slow start losing the first two games of the series before rebounding Sunday for a big 8-2 win. With their backs to the wall the Brussels Crusaders came out flying in the third game of the W.O.A.A. Intermediate “A” Fin­ al. After their 19-day layoff the Crusaders finally found their skating legs and put themselves back in the hunt for the “A” Championship with an 8-2 victory. A minute-and-a-half into the game Dave Stephenson deposited a nifty centering pass from Ken Cousins to give the Crusaders a lead they wouldn’trelinquish. Five minutes later Troy Pocaluyko banged in a beautiful pass from Brian Ten Pas to up the Crusader lead to 2-0. With three minutes left in the period Kevin Deitner blasted a shot home with assists going to Troy Pocaluyko and Dave Mont­ gomery. The shots in the period Blyth Atom 'B's end season at tournament The Blyth Atom B team travelled to Bayfield on Saturday to play in their year-end tournament for the Huron Perth Tier II Hockey League. The Blyth team came out in the 10a.m. game full of enthusiasm and vigour against the Goderich Blues. Goderich opened the scor­ ing midway in the first period, but Marc Bricker came back quickly for Blyth and scored unassisted with 32 seconds left in the period. At 6:26 in the second period Brad Walsh moved in from his defensive spot and put the puck past the Goderich goalie. Tim Lyons got an assist as he dug the puck out of the corner before passing to Brad. Marc Bricker got his second goal of the game as his shot was tipped past the Goderich goalie by one of their defencemen. Goderich quickly came back to were even at 10 apiece but Crusader goalie Ron Smith made several key saves to keep Kincar­ dine off the scoreboard. In the second period Rob Cardiff stuffed a centering pass from Randy Cardiff under the Kincar­ dine goalie. With a four goal lead the Crusaders relaxed and Kincar­ dine struck for two quick goals to cut Brussels’ lead to 4-2. With 41 seconds left in the period Dave Montgomery was sent in all alone on the Kincardine goalie on a pass from Ten Pas. Montgomery made no mistake as he deked the goalie and tapped the puck into the empty net. The Crusaders outshot Kin­ cardine 14 to 10 in the period. With a5-2 lead the Crusaders came out flying in the third period and outshot the Kings 15 to 4. Four minutes into the period Dave record a goal of their own to close the gap, but Blyth put the pressure on late in the period, and Tim Lyons notched an unassisted goal. After two periods Blyth was aheadby two goals. Earlyinthe third period Marc Bricker put the puck past the Goderich goalie once more to record a hat-trick for the game. Scott Arthur received an assist on a pass to Marc. At 4:23 Benjie Hakkers scored unassisted; Tim Lyons scored unassisted at 1:54; and Marc Bricker scored his fourth goal of the game at 1:37. The Blyth team looked in fine shape for their second game in the “A” round of the tournament. Blyth faced-off against the home-town Bayfield team for their second game. Three minutes later Brian Ten Pas blasted a slow shot into the bottom right hand corner to up the Crusader lead to 7-2. Assists went to Pocaluyko and Montgomery. With just over two minutes left in thegame, Ken Higgins scored a powerplay goal with the assist going to Paul Montgomery. NIGHTMARE IN KINCARDINE Game 2 of the series played in Kincardine on Saturday night was a nightmare for the Crusaders. Kincardine took the play to Brussels in the first period and jumped intoa 3-0 lead. With 10 seconds left in the period Troy Pocaluyko scored a powerplay marker with assists going to Brian Ten Pas and Dave Montgomery to cut the Kings’ lead. The second period started much like the first with Kincardine scoring three goals in the first seven minutes to take a 6 to 1 lead. At the 10-minute mark of the period Dave Montgomery scored with assists going to Ken Higgins and Brian Ten Pas. This goal ignited the Crusaders and they took the play to Kincardine. Ken Cousins scored two minutes later with assists going to Dave Stepehenson and Kevin Deitner. A minute and a half later the Crusaders cu t the Kings lead to 6 to 4 with a powerplay goal. Dave Stephenson spotted Troy Pocaluy­ ko all alone at the side of the net and fed him a perfect pass. With a minute left in the period the Kings scored a powerplay goal to up their lead to 7-4. The Crusaders outshot Kincardine 16 to 14 in the period. In the third period the Crusaders came out flying and dominated the play. However, Kincardine goalie Ron Martin played exceptionally stoning the Crusaders at every turn. During the period the Crusaders outshot Kincardine 16 to 8 but came up empty handed to give the Kings a 2 to 0 lead in the series. SLOW MOVING OPENER The first game of the series played in Brussels last Wednesday was a slow moving affair compared to the other two games. The Crusaders scored the only goal of the first period when Dave Stephenson deflected a pass from Ken Cousins over a sprawling King goalie to notch a shorthanded goal. The Crusaders outshot the Kings 9 to 6 in the period. Troy Pocaluyko notched another shorthanded midway through! he second period to up the Crusader lead to 2-0. However Kincardine came right back to score two goals in just over a minute to tie the score. During the second period the Crusader’s outshot Kincardine 13 to 9. However the long layoff began to take its toll in the third period as the Kings started to take the play to Brussels. Brian Ten Pass on passes from Dave Montgomery and Troy Poca­ luyko gave the Crusaders a 3 to 2 lead. During the third period Kincardine outshot Brussels 12 to 8. in the overtime period the Crusaders won the draw and quickly pressed the Kings. How­ ever Dave Stephenson’s shot just missed the open corner of the net and rebounded out to the blueline giving the Kings a 3 on 2 break. Kincardine made no mistakes as they went down the ice and ended the sudden death overtime after only 35 seconds to give them the series lead. The fourth game of the series will be played in Kincardine on Thursday, March 31 at 8:30 p.m. The fifth game will be back in Brussels on Friday, April 1 at 8 p.m. If the sixth and seventh games are necessary they will be played on April 2 in Kincardine at 8:30 p.m. andon April3 in Brussels at 8 p.m. Come out and support the team in their quest for a champion­ ship.
