Exeter peppered 34 shots at the Bulls’ netminder to take a 5-3 win and a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series. The teams meet in Brussels again on Sunday at 2. The Bulls travelled to Exeter on Friday night for the first game in the best-of-seven series with the Hawks. The Hawks came out strong and quickly scored just 22 seconds into the game past goalie Jeff McGavin to take an early 1-0 lead. It took another six minutes of play before the Bulls’ Ron Strome finally found the mark, assisted by Bill Kerr and Ron Chambers, to tie the score. Exeter slipped another goal in at lyth Atoms in must-win position BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms continued their group championship series against Clinton last week with two games being played. It was all bad news for Blyth fans as the team lost both games and fell behind two games to one in the series to Clinton. Blyth hosted Clinton last Wednesday, March 23 where they were embarrassed in this penalty filled contest 10-2. Clinton took a 3-1 first period lead as Michael Bromley was Blyth’s marksman. Peter Craig sent Michael in on the Clinton goaltenderand slipped a backhand shot through the goalie’s legs. The scoreboard read Clinton 4 - Blyth 2 at the end of the second period as the two teams exchanged goals in the period. Jerrod Button scored Blyth’s second goals as he also slipped a shot between the goalie’s legs after being set up by James McNichol. Clinton sent chock waves through the arena in the third frame as they scored six unan­ swered goals and evened the series as they humbled the home team 10-2. The two teams met again as Blyth visited Clinton on Thursday, March 24 for the pivotal third game of the series. Once again Blyth fell behind the eight ball early as Clinton took another 3-1 first period lead. Michael Bromley recorded Blyth’s first period goal with able assists from Jerrod Button and Peter Craig. After a scoreless second period, Michael Bromley narrowed Clin­ ton’s lead to3-2 as he scored an unassisted goal. Although Clinton upped the count to 4-2, Blyth mounted a furious comeback that culminated with the tying goal being scored as time ran out. Michael Bromley notched the hat-trick as he scored an unassist­ the 8:01 mark, but the Bulls managed to keep up, scoring again at 10:06 to even the score. It looked like a first period deadlock, butwith two seconds left on the clock, Exeter got the go-ahead goal to hold a 3-2 lead. The second period belonged to Exeter as they dominated the play. They scored the fourth goal at the 9:06 mark and then added a power play goal in another two minutes. At this point goalie McGavin pulled himself and was replaced by ed goal with just under five minutes left in the game. This set the stage for some late game heroics on Blyth’s part. With the Blyth goaltender on the bench in favour of an extra attacker Brian McNichol poked in a loose puck in a goalmouth scramble with one second left in regulation time - to send the game into overtime with Michael Bromley registering the assist. Clinton scored two early goals in overtime to take a 6-4 lead but once again Blyth dug a little deeper and almost pulled it out. Brian McNi- chol socred, with assists from Ryan Chamney and Jamie Bromley, with two and a half minutes left in the overtime serssion as the tension mounted. With Clinton playing a man short and Blyth’s goaltender on the bench once again, the Atom’s gave it one more go. The team came within inches in the dying seconds but the puck deflected wide of the net and time ran out as Clinton claimed a 6-5 overtime win. The team can be congratulated for an excellent effort and some exciting thrills as they pulled out all the stops. The team faces elimina­ tion or they could tie the series up as the teams meet again tonight, Wednesday, March 30 in Blyth at 7:30. An appreciative crowd could very well make the difference as the Atom’s play their final home game of the season. The Hawks scored once more before the period ended to hold a sound 6-3 lead at the end of the period. They had played 3:36 of the third period when Kevin McArter scor­ ed from Mike Chapman for a power play goal and got the Bulls rolling again. They had played 11:06 when Tim Fritz found the mark from Chapman and defenceman Doug Taylor. Ron Strome scored his second goal at the 18 minute mark from Chapman, to bring the Bulls within one. The Bulls had out-shot the Hawks 28-21 but couldn’t beat the goalie. The two teams returned to the ice for the second game in Brussels on Sunday afternoon. Brussels opened the scoring after 6:27 of the first period when Greg Crummer scored from defenceman Paul Robinson for a power play goal. It took another seven minutes of play before Exeter tied the score. The Bulls took the lead once more with 3:51 left on the clock as Greg Crummer scored his second power play goal from teammates Murray Haughton and Tim Fritz. The period ended 2-1 in favour of the Bulls. The second period had the Hawks come out and score a power play goal in the first minute of play to tie the game again. The Hawks then scored the go-ahead goal with 7:51 left on the clock. The Bulls battled back with Bill Kerr scoring unassisted at the HULLETT TWP. The teams had played nine minutes of the third period when Exeter scored to go up by one and make it 4-3 in their favour. Just two minutes later the Hawks scored an empty net goal as goalie McClement got tied up in the corner against the boards giving them a two goal spread. The Bulls were unable to come back and are now down by two games in the series. The visitors out-shot the Bulls 34-23 for their victory. The Bulls did not display the spark and drive in these two games that they had in the Wellesley series. Come on group, we know you can do it!
