Brussels Bulls trail Exeter by 2 games
Greg McClement is kept busy in Sunday afternoon’s Junior “D” game. Exeter peppered 34 shots at the
Bulls’ netminder to take a 5-3 win and a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series. The teams meet in Brussels again
on Sunday at 2.
The Bulls travelled to Exeter on
Friday night for the first game in
the best-of-seven series with the
Hawks.
The Hawks came out strong and
quickly scored just 22 seconds into
the game past goalie Jeff McGavin
to take an early 1-0 lead.
It took another six minutes of
play before the Bulls’ Ron Strome
finally found the mark, assisted by
Bill Kerr and Ron Chambers, to tie
the score.
Exeter slipped another goal in at
lyth Atoms in
must-win position
BY RUSTY BLADES
The Blyth Atoms continued their
group championship series against
Clinton last week with two games
being played.
It was all bad news for Blyth fans
as the team lost both games and fell
behind two games to one in the
series to Clinton. Blyth hosted
Clinton last Wednesday, March 23
where they were embarrassed in
this penalty filled contest 10-2.
Clinton took a 3-1 first period
lead as Michael Bromley was
Blyth’s marksman. Peter Craig
sent Michael in on the Clinton
goaltenderand slipped a backhand
shot through the goalie’s legs. The
scoreboard read Clinton 4 - Blyth 2
at the end of the second period as
the two teams exchanged goals in
the period. Jerrod Button scored
Blyth’s second goals as he also
slipped a shot between the goalie’s
legs after being set up by James
McNichol.
Clinton sent chock waves
through the arena in the third
frame as they scored six unan
swered goals and evened the series
as they humbled the home team
10-2.
The two teams met again as
Blyth visited Clinton on Thursday,
March 24 for the pivotal third game
of the series.
Once again Blyth fell behind the
eight ball early as Clinton took
another 3-1 first period lead.
Michael Bromley recorded Blyth’s
first period goal with able assists
from Jerrod Button and Peter
Craig.
After a scoreless second period,
Michael Bromley narrowed Clin
ton’s lead to3-2 as he scored an
unassisted goal. Although Clinton
upped the count to 4-2, Blyth
mounted a furious comeback that
culminated with the tying goal
being scored as time ran out.
Michael Bromley notched the
hat-trick as he scored an unassist
the 8:01 mark, but the Bulls
managed to keep up, scoring again
at 10:06 to even the score.
It looked like a first period
deadlock, butwith two seconds left
on the clock, Exeter got the
go-ahead goal to hold a 3-2 lead.
The second period belonged to
Exeter as they dominated the play.
They scored the fourth goal at the
9:06 mark and then added a power
play goal in another two minutes.
At this point goalie McGavin
pulled himself and was replaced by
ed goal with just under five
minutes left in the game. This set
the stage for some late game
heroics on Blyth’s part. With the
Blyth goaltender on the bench in
favour of an extra attacker Brian
McNichol poked in a loose puck in a
goalmouth scramble with one
second left in regulation time - to
send the game into overtime with
Michael Bromley registering the
assist.
Clinton scored two early goals in
overtime to take a 6-4 lead but once
again Blyth dug a little deeper and
almost pulled it out. Brian McNi-
chol socred, with assists from Ryan
Chamney and Jamie Bromley, with
two and a half minutes left in the
overtime serssion as the tension
mounted. With Clinton playing a
man short and Blyth’s goaltender
on the bench once again, the
Atom’s gave it one more go. The
team came within inches in the
dying seconds but the puck
deflected wide of the net and time
ran out as Clinton claimed a 6-5
overtime win.
The team can be congratulated
for an excellent effort and some
exciting thrills as they pulled out all
the stops. The team faces elimina
tion or they could tie the series up
as the teams meet again tonight,
Wednesday, March 30 in Blyth at
7:30. An appreciative crowd could
very well make the difference as
the Atom’s play their final home
game of the season.
