Blyth Midgets start All-Ontario 'E' finals It was a too-famlliar sight for Blyth Midget’s goaltender Mike Henry Monday night as he was left alone to try to thwart Muncey forwards storming the net as the Blyth Midgets lost the first game of their All-Ontario championship series 7-2 Monday night in Blyth. The second game is Wednesday night in Mt. Brydges at 8 p.m. with the third game in Blyth Friday at 8 p.m. Brussels Barons play in Goderich Blyth Tykes win league title The Brussels Barons Novice travelled to Goderich Saturday for the W.O.A.A. Novice House League Playoff Tournament. It was evident that they hadn’t been on the ice for over a week. Nevertheless their first game resulted in a 6-0 win over Belgrave. Scott Clarkson scored Brussels’ first goal, assisted by Andrew Exel. Just one minute later, Brett Fischer scored, assisted by Janice Jacklin and Corey Newman. With one minute left in the first period, Clarkson and Exel combined again for Brussel’s third goal. Belgrave came on strong in the second period and kept Brussels hustling to prevent any goals from being scored against them. Finally Exel scored for Brussels on some nice teamwork from Clarkson and Jeff Lewington. Brussels switched some of theif players around in the third period, letting the defenceman play for­ ward. Jeff Elliott scored for Brussels on a pass from Exel and Janice Jacklin scored Brussels’ final goal assisted by Corey Newman and Brett Fischer. Ryan McGlaughlin played in net and earned a shut-out for his efforts. Later that day, Brussels return­ ed to take on Hensail for a very exciting game. Hensall scored two quick goals at the end of the first period which seemed to spur Brussels on in the second. Jeff Lewington scored Brussels’ first goal, assisted by Joanne Van Keulen and Scott Clarkson. Then at the end of the second period Lewington scored again, this time unassisted, leaving the game tied to start off the third period.' Hensall came on strong scoring thefirsttwogoals, but Brussels came back with Corey Newman scoring on a pass from Peter Wall. Brussels tried hard to get one more for a tie, but to no avail and Hensall scored to win the game 5-3. The Blyth Tykes played three hockey games on the weekend, playing league rivals for the championship and trophy. In game one against Goderich in Goderich Friday, March 25, Corey Shannon got Blyth on the scoreboard early butGoderich came right back to tie the game. Darryl Bromley put Blyth ahead again on a set-up by Jason Badley but once again a stubborn Goderich team tied the game making the score 2 to 2. Blyth slowly started to find their skating legs, and scored five unassisted goals to come out 7-2 victors. Michael Haggitt led the attackwitha hat-trick. Amanda Anderson and Corey Shannon picked up singles. This win put Blyth on the “A” side of the tournament to play Clinton on Saturday. Clinton came out flying, scoring two fast goals. Blyth once again slowing found their skating legs, to come back for a 5-3 win. Darryl Bromley scored Blyth’s first goal on a pass from Corey Shannon. Michael Haggitt took control of the game and scored a natural hat-trick. This put Blyth a head 4 to 2. Clinton did not die. They scored once more to make the game close 4-3. Michael Courtney iced the game, on a break-away goal, set up on a long pass by J ason Blyth Novice Tigers win consolation championship BY BJ AND THE TIGERS The Blyth Novice Tigers partici­ pated intheyearend weekendlong Novice tournament hosted jointly by Goderich and Bayfield March 25, 26 and 27. Shane Burkholder was goal­ tender for the games. Their first game was against Zurich Friday eveningat7:30in Bayfield. The Tigers were defeated 4-1 with Jeff Cowan scoring their only goal Badley. The final score was Blyth, 5 - Clinton, 3. This win put Blyth in the “A” Championship game against their rivals all year long, Zurich. These two strong teams hit the ice Sunday afternoon in Bayfield to once again display their hockey skills on ice. Zurich came out on a high, hungry for the win. They had notlostallyear. Scott Bromley who played net all weekend, came up with many great saves. He was hot. The flow of the hockey game changed and Blyth turned it on. Chris Carter slapped in Blyth’s first goal, jumping on a rebound. Corey Shannon got his legs going scoring a natural hat-trick. But Blyth was not done for Michael Haggittfound the mark making the score 5-0 for Blyth. Finally Zurich broke through Blyth’s almost unbeatable de­ fence. Jeremy Geoffrey got behind Blyth’s defence and picked the top corner. Blyth shut the door, and finished the game with one more goal. This one scored by Michael Courtney. Blyth skated away with a hard-fought 6 to 1 win, over a very strong Zurich team, to win the league title. Hard work and team play did pay off, as this young talent picked up alargetrophy, and gold medals for each player. unassisted in the last two minutes of play. The Tigers were now in competitionfor the “B” Cham­ pionship. At5:30p.m. Saturday the Tigers played against Clinton in Bayfield. Both teams played an excellent game. The first period ended scoreless. Clinton scored three minutes into the second period. Four minutes remaining in the Continued on page 21 After winning two games in Warsaw the Blyth Midgets were ready and eager to finish the series. Saturday afternoon saw the local boys assemble at the arena in eager anticipation of the game. The Warsaw team arrived a little late, but after a quick change both teams were ready to play. The Warsaw team came out strong and fast and after 22 seconds the Warsaw captain beat the entire Blyth team and scored an unassisted goal. Blyth tightened their defence and held the Warsaw team off time and time again. Blyth goalie Mike Henry made many spectacular saves to help his team stay in the game. At 7:26 in the first period Larry Hunking scored a power play goal, with Dan McDougall and Kriss Snell assist­ ing. The first period ended in a one-all tie. The second period was filled with penalties as both teams resorted to illegal tactics to gain an edge. Both goalies made excellent moves in order tokeepthe score tied. Both teams had a well deserved rest before play began in the third period. The teams settled down and there were few penalties in the third. Warsaw came out strong, but Blyth goalie Mike Henry, along with the defence, proved too much for the Warsaw team and prevented them from scoring. At 10:38 Kriss Snell sent Larry Hunking a pass in the high slot area and Larry one-timed the puck past the Warsaw goalie. This proved to be the final scoring play of the game as Blyth won byaonegoal lead. Blyth captain Larry Hunking This was the last game of the yearfor theTykes. A nice way to finish a good year. Congratulations team. provided the Warsaw team with hats as an expression of their appreciation of the hospitality Warsaw showed them last week­ end, although the first two periods of that match were marred by many penalties, with a Warsaw player receiving a match penalty for butt ending. In total, 49 minutes in penalties were called. With this victory Blyth earns the right to go on to the O.M.H.A. Midget E. Finals. They will be playing a team from Muncey. The first game was scheduled for March 28 in Blyth, with the rest of the scedule to be made up at that time. For fans travelling with the team, it should be noted that Muncey plays their home games in the Mt. Brydges arena. Overloads upset London The Blyth Radfords Overloads Oldtimers won three games re­ cently. On Monday, March 14 Blyth defeated the Clinton Colts 8 to 3. Wayne McDougall led the Overloads with four goals. Singles went to Bruce Howson, Bruce Mason, Jim Button and Barney Stewart. On Monday, March 21 the Overloads defeated Ayton 7 to 4. Bryan Black scored three times for the winners while singles went to Wayne McDougall, Bruce How- son, Terry Rutledge, Tony Van Bakkel and Jim Carter. The Overloads avenged an earlier loss to the London Do Boys with a hard fought 4 to 3 victory on Wednesday, March 23. Jim Dick­ son’s goal with 1:15 remaining in the game proved to be the winner. Other Blyth goal scorers were Wayne McDougall, Bryan Black and Tom Black. Ron Ritchie was solid in the net.
