'Not my will but yours be done'
BY PASTOR BOB BARNHART
BLYTH CHURCH OF GOD
Gethsemane was agony for
Christ. In Luke 22 Verse 44 it says:
“and being in anguish he prayed
more earnestly, and his sweat was
like drops of blood falling to the
ground.’’
We need to ask what did Jesus
struggle over that caused the
anguish. In Luke 22:42 it says:
“Father if you are willing take this
cup from me. Yet not my will but
yours be done.’’ The struggle was
with the cross and the Father’s
will. It was like Jesus was saying if
there is any other way I pray that it
can be done that way, rather than
by my going to the cross. Yet Jesus
then added not my will but yours be
done. Jesus valued the Father’s
will more than He valued his own
life. So Jesus wanted to do the
Father’s will but struggled with
what it would take to do it.
Let’s look at the phrase ‘ * not my
will but yours be done.” I believe
there are four different reasons
why p. person would say that. The
first is what I call hopeless
submission. This is where you look
at the situation and see that there is
no possible way to win so you just
give in. The second is what I call
battered into submission. This is
where you try and try and try and
try but always lose. You gettiredof
running into a brick wall. You give
in because you are battered into it.
The third is what I call manipula
tion submission. This occurs when
you try to manipulate the person by
telling them what they want to hear
so that you can get what you want. I
don’t believe Jesus said “not my
will but yours because he looked at
God’spower and said “whocan
defeat God” so he hopelessly
submitted. I don’t bleieve He tried
not to go to the cross and finally
God battered him into submission.
I don’t believe Jesus tried to
manipulate God by saing what he
knew God wanted to hear hoping
God would change his mind. I
believe Jesus said “Not my will but
yours be done” because he had
complete trust in the Father. Jesus
knew that God knew what He was
doing and that He would not
foresake or abandon him.
After struggling with this Jesus
went to the cross. God may ask us to
do something where we would
have to struggle in our own
Gethsemane experience. We then
have the choice of how we are going
to respond. Will we respond in
hopeless submission: “who can
defeat God?” Will we respond in

battered submission? “I tried my
way and it didn’t work so I will try
God’s way.” Will we respond by
saying we will do it hoping that it
was just a test or that God will
change His mind? 1 want to
respond by having complete trust
in God.
Jesus did go to the cross.
Hebrews 12:2 says: “Let us fix our
eyes on Jesus, the author and
perfector of our faith. Who for the
joy set before him endured the
cross scorning its shame. And sat
down at the right hand of the throne
of God.” Jesus had complete trust
in the Father and the Father didn’t
let him down. My prayer is that I
can say “not my will but thine be
done” with complete trust in God.
