Blyth Midgets lead all-Ontario semi-final The Blyth Midgets completed a busy weekend of hockey and took on a winning note. The team travelled to Honey wood on Thursday night for the fifth game in their OMHA series. Until this game both teams had showed a complete dominance over the other on home ice with Blyth winning 11-2 and 13-2 in Blyth and Honeywood winning 11-5 and 5-4 on their home ice. The first period was fast, clean, hard-hitting, end-to-end hockey with both goalies making spectacu lar saves to keep their team in the game. With 30 seconds left in the period Drew Allen scored on a hard rising shot from the high slot area. Paul Hoggart received an assist on this goal. In the second period at 10:11 Kriss Snell was to notch a goal for Blyth to give the team a two-goal lead. Paul Hoggart and Dean Whitfield received assists for this goal. Only 20 seconds later Honey wood came back with a goal of their own to close the gap. At 6:49 of the second period Kriss Snell and Dan McDougall combined to set Larry Hunking in the clear. Larry drilled the puck past the Honeywood goalie with a low blistering slap shot. The Honeywood team came back once more to close the gap at 2:28 of the second period. The score after two periods of play was Blyth 3, Honeywood 2. After a short rest and a good talk the Blyth boys started the third period fast and hard. They kept the puck, for the most part, in the Honeywood net and forced the Honeywood goalie to make numer ous excellent saves. At 11:24 Jason VanderHeyden scored an unassist ed goal to put Blyth ahead by two The Brussels Novice Crusaders were the winners of the consolation trophy at the Blyth Little Lions Novice Hockey Tournament on March 12, defeating the Blyth B’s 3-1 and the Lucknow Novices 2-0 to take the reserve championship. The players are [front, from left] Scott Clarkson, Chad McCallum, Tommy Pearson, Josh Beuerman and Steven Mac han; [back] Geoff Dalton, Mike Dauphin, Andrew Exel, Jeff Finch, Jamie Thomas, Shawn Nicholson and Shane Wilson, with coach Bob Thomas. Coach Greg Wilson was absent when the photo was taken. Novice Crusaders take crown The Brussels Novice (Crusa ders) found the Blyth Lions Novice Tournament on March 12 quite a thrill, when they finally accom plished what they hadn’t been able to do all year - win a game or two. Not only did they win a game, but the Consolation Championship. Their first game was gainst a strong, aggressive team from Ripley, who totally dominated the second period, racking up four goals. Brussels finally found their legs in the third period, and once more. Honey wood managed a small come back and scored once more at 4:10 of the third period. Blyth resumed their hard pace after this and again and again the Honey wood goalie proved to be better than the Blyth shooters. With 12 seconds left in the game Larry Hunking tipped in a shot by Paul Hoggart to close the scoring for the game. Blyth finally won the game with a 5-3 score and the series three games to two. This was an excellent series with both teams playing good hockey. The Blyth team had twice as many players than Honeywood but Honeywood with their well-disci plined team showed what hard work and smart play can do. ON TO WARSAW With Blyth winning over Honey wood, they also won the right to continue in their quest for an All-Ontariochampionship. The next step was a team from Warsaw. Thefirstgame was scheduled quickly for Friday night at 9 p.m. in Warsaw. The team met at the Blyth arena at 3:30 in the afternoon for their long trip East. One of the coaches was detained at home so at 4:00 p. m. the team left without him for the long journey. The weather proved not very helpful as numer ous snow squalls were encounter- edonthetrip. Mostoftheway to Newmarket the roads were wet and very slippery. Despite this good time was made to Peterbor ough. In Peterborough the fun started with various different navigators trying to find the right way through the city. Most of the highlights of the city (including the zoo) were seen by the team during this ‘ ‘ drive although they couldn’t score any goals, they did prevent any more goals from being scored against them. This 4-0 loss put them on the “B” side of the tournament. Next, they faced-off against the Blyth 2 Novice team. Shane Wilson opened the scoring for Brussels on a break-away. During the second period, Andrew Exel scored the second goal for Brussels, also unassisted. Blyth’s Danny Cham- ney then scored for Blyth leaving the score 2-1 for Brussels at the end about”. The team arrived at the arena at 9:15 to be greeted by the “late” coach and a waiting Warsaw team. The Blyth team quickly changed andtooktothe ice. After a short warmup the game was underway at 9:45. Blyth quickly shook away their stiff cramped legs and proceeded to skate with this large Warsaw team. At 10:33 Dan McDougall passed to Larry Hunk ing. Larry discharged a low hard slapshot to record the first goal of the game. Warsaw responded with determined effort and finally beat goalie Mike Henry at 3:27 to close the scoring in the first period. Warsaw continued to play well in the second period but were unable to get the puck past Blyth goalie Mike Henry. At 8:59 Paul Hoggart put a rebound of a Keith Verburg shot to put the Blyth boys back ahead. At 5:51 Warsaw came back to tie the game once more. Determined effort by Kriss Snell and Larry Hunking enabled Dan McDougall to regain the lead for Blyth. Warsaw came back one minute later to once more tie the game. After a short rest Blyth came out strong in the third period. At the 11-minute mark Kriss Snell passed to Larry Hunking who shot at the net. The puck was tipped by a Warsaw player and went into the net. Kriss Snell then stuffed a loose puck in the Warsaw net to give Blyth a two-goal lead. Dan Mc Dougall and Larry Hunking receiv ed assists on this goal. This closed the scoring for the game despite numerous fine chances on behalf of both teams. Final score, Blyth 5, Warsaw 3. The Blyth team took to the road again to find their motel which was of the second period. In the third period, Brussels displayed some excellent work. Andrew Exel scored Brussels’ final goal on some nice passing from Scott Clarkson and Jeff Lewington. This 3-1 win set them up for the Consolation final against Lucknow. This last game was probably the best played game for Brussels. They played hard, giving 100 per cent effort, which finally payed off. Continued on page 24 about 20 km. from Warsaw. When they arrived and got settled in the rooms it was decided to go to Peterborough for something to eat. During their “drive about’’ of the city the boys noticed many good places to eat. After this snack the boys settled down to sleep for the restofthe night. Onthistrip the coaches were in close contact with the boys and learned something of their personalities. Despite not getting to sleep till late, promptly at 8:30 in the morning all the boys were upwatching the “Smurfs” on television. At two, Saturday afternoon the puck was dropped for the start of game two. At 11:45 Warsaw notched their first goal of the game. Blyth came back quickly and Dan McDougall scored assisted by Larry Hunking and Drew Allen. Warsawopenedaone-goal lead again at 8:07 in the second period.
