Sports ulls eliminate Wellesley on to Exeter BYLOISMcARTER The Brussels Junior ‘D’ Bulls travelled to Wellesley on Tuesday night for the fifth game in their best of seven playoff series holding a 3-1 lead in games. You knew from the drop of the first puck that the Applejacks were out for a victory and it looked like the official in charge wasn’t going to let the Bulls touch the home team as he started assessing penalties after the first minute of play, but he levelled off and the Bulls picked up only eight penalties and the Applejacks 10 in the 70 minutes of play. Wellesley capitalized on one of those early penalties to the Bulls and scored the first goal after just 3:18 of play for their power play effort. The Bulls came back just five minutes later on a return power play when Mike Chapman scored from defenceman Bill Haines and Tim Fritz. They had played 15:05 of the first period when Ron Strome scored the go-ahead goal from Mike Chapman and Stuart Bowman. But Wellesley came back just 58 seconds later to score again and the first period ended tied at two. The teams had played about 10 minutes of the second period when Mike Chapman scored his second power play goal from Tim Fritz and Kevin McArter to put Brussels ahead. The teams had played 12:59 of the period when Brussels added the fourth goal as Greg Crummer scored from Tim Fritz. The remain der of the period was scoreless." The Bulls must have relaxed too much between periods as their respectable 4-2 lead quickly disap peared as the Applejacks came out and scored three goals in the first four minutes and eight seconds of the period to suddenly hold a 5-4 lead on the scoreboard. Some very boisterous support from the large turnout of Brussels fans finally got the Bulls motivated and Ron Strome came up with his second goal from Chapman and Fritz after 8:59 had been played in thethirdperiod. The remaining 11:01 minutes of the period had both teams making good end-to- end rushes but both goalies came through with good saves to keep the crowd gasping in some heart stopping action and after sixty minutes of play the score held at a 5-5 tie. Friday The teams took a short breather and lined up for a 10-minute overtime period. The same see saw action continued as both teams had chances but couldn’t break the barriers. Finally with 2:06 remaining on the clock the Bulls had made a rush on the net when Kevin McArter stepped in over the blue line to retrieve a loose puck and blast a shot past the goalie to put the Bulls ahead with Tim Fritz getting an assist on the play. It proved to be the winning goal. The Applejacks in an attempt to tie the score once more pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker. Within 40 seconds Mike Chapman flipped a rolling puck down the ice that got by the home defence to roll and curve perfectly into an empty net. Fritz and Haines picked up assists on the play and once more gave the Bulls a two-goal lead. Brian Campbell scored a second empty net goal at the nine minute mark on a pass from Kevin Lee to give the Bulls a sound 8-5 victory. This win eliminated Wellesley from any further play this season. The Bulls will now meet the Exeter Hawks who eliminated Mitchell on Friday night for the north division title. The first game of the series will be played in Exeter on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. with the second game expected to be back in Brussels on Sunday at 2 p.m. A booster fan bus is planned. Those wanting to go may sign up at J.R.’s and the bus will be leaving from the parking lot behind the Brussels Hotel.
