Claus Breede, Project Director at the museum has been asked by the committee to prepare a draft proposal for establishing the hall of fame. An area in the new museum on the mezzanine just outside the offices would lend itself to use as an exhibit area to honour individual citizens who have made an out standing contribution to the quali ty of life in the county, Mr. Breede said. Among the things to be studied in the proposal is the establish ment of an advisory committee to review nominees, a system of obtaining nominees, types of exhibits to be developed around each member and the cost of establishing the project. Saturday night the first official function in the new building will take place when a ‘ ‘country supper and barn dance” will be held in the large storage area of the museum (once the big event is over, museum artifacts will begin to be moved back in). The event will feature a dinner at 7 p.m. with smoked pork chops, baked potato, baked beans, and more. Afterward there will be a dance. Admittance is restricted to 300. An open house has tentatively been planned for the new building on Sunday, May 1 with invitations to be sent to local members of parliament as well as Lilly Munro, Minister of Culture and Communi cations for Ontario and Flora Macdonald, Federal Communica tion Minister. Social Service demand down in Huron For the fourth straight year the number of people requiring social services assistance in Huron Coun ty dropped in 1987, Administrator J. A. MacKinnon told Huron County his annual report at the March meeting of council. “From our perspective,” Mr. MacKinnon told councillors “the decreasing caseload is attributed to the improving local economy and the number of jobs available especially in the Spring-Fall peri od,” he said. He explained that it was his department’s experience that people were able to work for longer periods during the summer months which meant they were able to qualify for Unemployment Insurance in the winter meaning they didn ’ t have to resort to welfare assistance. The result was a saving of $47,820.78 from the county’s $281,238 share of the total $870,814.87 budget. The number of referrals dropped by 4.09 per cent; the number of cases issued dropped by 16.01 per cent and the number of beneficiar ies dropped by 18.89 per cent. There was one area of disturbing growth in service. In 1987 the agency assisted in two cases of victims of family violence at the Women’s House of Bruce County and 36 cases at the Survival Through Friendship House in Huron county representing 1828 days compared to 1210 days in 1986. This growth of more than 50 per cent he attributed not so much to an increase in family violence buttoa greater awareness of the availability of the program and more people taking advantage of it in time of need.
