Brussels Bulls come home to winning ways BY LOIS McARTER The Brussels Bulls Junior D team travelled to Wellesley on Friday night for the third game of their playoff series against the Applejacks. They were four minutes into the first period when the home team beat goalie McClement, on a power play attack. They added their second goal 1:23 later to take a 2-0 lead. The Bulls capitalized on a power play at the 11:27 mark when Paul Edwards scored from Mike Chap­ man and Tim Fritz. They had played 15:01 of the period when Wellesley added a power play goal but the Bulls quickly came back at 15:55 to make their own power play work when Tim Fritz scored from Chapman and Ron Strome to keep them within one of the home team. The remainder of the period was scoreless with Wellesley holding a 3-2 lead, and a 10-9 lead in shots on goal. The two teams played the second 20 minutes without either team managing to score a goal. The Bulls picked up two penalties while the Applejacks picked up five. The Bulls outshot the home team 16-13 in the period but just couldn’t beat a hot goalie. After four minutes of the third period Mike Chapman scored from Tim Fritz and Kevin McArter to tie the score. Five minutes later Bill Kerr scored from Tim Dillow and RonStrometogivethe Bulls the lead. It was 11:34 when Wellesley scored to tie the game once more and then three minutes later the Brussels defence got caught out of position and the Applejacks scored again to take the lead. They scored once more at 19:07 and held that Blyth Overloads win 3 games The Blyth Radfords Overloads Oldtimers played three games during the past week and recorded victories in all three games. On Wednesday, March 9 Blyth travel­ led to Listowel and after a hard fought game the Overloads were victorious 6 to 5. On Saturday, March 12 the Overloads avenged three earlier losses to the Wingham Goodtimers with a convincing 9 to 4 victory. Blyth goals were scored by Dennis Knox, three; Wayne Mcdougall, two; Barney Stewart, two; Terry Rutledge, one and John Watson, one. On Sunday, March 13 the Overloads travelled to Mildmay and although being understaffed recorded a come from behind 6 to 3 victory. Blyth goals were scored by Wayne McDougall, four; Jim Dickson, one; and Jim Button, one. On Monday, March 21 the Ayton Oldtimers will play against the Overloads in Blyth at 8:45 p.m. lead for the remaining time period. Total shots on net were 36 - 35 in favor of the Applejacks. MORE SUCCESS AT HOME The fourth game came back to Brussels for a 4:30 game following the Atom tournament. They had played just 3:37 of the first period when the visitors beat goalie Jeff McGavin to take a 1-0 lead. The Bulls came back after two more minutes of play to tie the score when Ron Strome scored from Kevin McArter and Bill Haines. Ashotatthe9:28markhitthe goal post and deflected back behind goalie McGavin to give Wellesley the lead. They added one more with 2:16 remaining in the period as they capitalized on a power play to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. The Applejacks were the first to score after just 3:20 was played in the second period to take a sound 4-1 lead. The Bulls took advantage of a power play to score just two minutes later when Mike Vincent found the mark assisted by Kevin Lee and Doug Taylor. There was 7:03 left in the period when Stuart Bowman scored from Tim Fritz to make it 4-3. Mike Chapman scored from Kevin McArter with 4:14 left to tie the score. The period ended in a 4-4 tie. Two minutes into the third period the visitors scored to take the lead once more. The Bulls kept coming back and after just 5:45 had been played in the period Kevin McArter scored a power play goal from Greg Crummer and Brian Campbell to tie the score. Another power play goal came at the 7:03 mark when Ron Strome combined with Mike Chapman to put the Bullsbackinthelead.Just 1:44 later Bill Kerr scored from de­ fenceman Paul Robinson to go ahead by two. A minute later Brian Campbell scored once more from defenceman Paul Robinson to give the Bulls three quick goals. The visitors pulled their goalie at the 6:48 mark but the extra attacker failed to help as Jeff McGavin came up with numerous good saves and the Bulls lengthy shots down the ice always seemed to miss the open net. The team hung on to take the 8-5 victory. The two teams will meet for game five on Tuesday night in Wellesley and if necessary will be back in Brussels on Wednesday evening (tonight) for game six. Paul Thompson of Brussels was doubly happy with the Bulls’ victory as he picked up the 50-50 draw for $114. In the other series being played between Exeter and Mitchell, Exeter was holding a 3-0 lead in games until this past weekend and Mitchell came up with two big wins on Friday and Sunday. That series will also continue possibly on Tuesday night. Brussels Bulls close in on the Wellesley Applejack’s net during action Sunday in Brussels.
