As a result of numerous conver sation related activities the entire group has become very conscious of the need to work towards educating the general public about the many concerns that are damaging our environment. Stu dents feel they must take steps now to ensure that our non-renewable resources are in fact conserved and also move towards putting legisla tion into effect to either curb, solve, or eliminate the various problems like acid rain, depletion of the ozone layer, the green house effect, transportation of nuclear waste and all types of water and air pollution. Recently students received word from the Ontario Federation of Hunters and Anglers that they placed second in the Province for the Ministry of Natural Resources Junior Conservation Trophy com petition . The competition was open to all schools and groups from across Ontario with the mandate to recognize groups for their work in the area of conservation. Last year the classes took part in the annual “Pitch In’’ campaign in which they picked up ail the litter around the schoolyard and sur rounding area. They also partici- patedinthe Ministry of Natural Resources essay and poster con tests. In addition, they also participated in programs at the Wawanosh Nature Centre spon sored by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. As a part of their science curriculum they also studied the Belgrave Creek and completed ten different water quality tests. Fifty white pine trees were planted in the schoolyard with idea of starting an arboretum. Other activities included picking tree seed, read ing articles, viewing films and inviting speakers to address topics of concern. Units which the classes particularly enjoyed were on such topics as Ecology, Ecosystems, Trees, Ecozones of Canada, Wild life in Jeopardy and the Classifica tion and Characteristics of Ani mals. The classes have come to realize that nature attempts to keep all the various ecosystems in balance and if upset the food webs may be destroyed and the ecosystems cease. They are also very aware of the numerous environmental con cerns and in their small way are attempting to make the Members of Parliament aware by writing letters. The school is committed to the cause of conservation and recently nursed a sick, Screech Owl back to health and released it back to nature. The school plans to continue its program and hopefully others will appreciate the concern and lend a hand to improve the environmentfor all wildlife and mankind.
