Crusaders defeat Durham in over-time thriller The Brussels Crusaders elimi­ nated the Durham 72’s Friday i ight when Dave Montgomery’s lapshot broke a 5-5 deadlock with only 49 seconds left in the game. Since the Crusaders had the best record during the regular season they had their choice on whether to rest or play. They chose to take a bye to the “A” final and will want 2-3 weeks for a winner to be selected between Teeswater and Kincardine. In the fifth game of the series played in Brussels on Wednesday Blyth Midgets now in the OMHA quarter final series against Honeywood, took time out last week to pose with their WOAA championship trophy. Missing when the photo was taken was Mike Henry. night the Crusaders jumped into an early lead that they would never relinquish. Powerplays played a major role in the Crusaders’ victory as they scored 4 on the night. At the midway mark of the first period Troy Pocaluyko connected on passes from Ken Cousins and Dave Stephenson. Thirty seconds later Rob Cardiff upped the Crusader lead with assists going to Hugh Hanlypnd Randy Clarke. With two minutes left in the period Len Stamper moved in from the point to score another powerplay goal. Assists wentto Brian Ten Pas and Trevor Pocaluyko. In acquiring their 3-0 lead the Crusaders outshot Durham 14 to 10. Just over two minutes into the period Brussels scored their third powerplay goal of the game. Dave Stephenson scored the goal with assists going to Ken Cousins and Dave Montgomery. Durham cut the Crusader’s lead to 4-2 as they notched two goals before the second period ended. The third period turned out to be all Crusaders as they dominated the play. Ken Cousins scored just seven seconds into the period to give the Crusaders a 5-2 lead. Midway through the period Mike Watson killed any chance Durham had fora comeback. His powerplay goal, the Crusaders fourth of the game was assisted by Paul Mont­ gomery. One minute later Kevin Deitner scored from Ken Cousins and Trevor Pocaluyko to complete the scoring. The Crusaders outshot Durham by a 13 to 3 margin. The sixth game of the series played in Durham turned out to be an exciting and crowd-pleasing affair. Early in the first period the Crusaders completely dominated play outshooting Durham 12 to 3 in the first ten minutes. However a sharp Durham goalie turned aside what looked to be sure Crusader goals. Midway through the period Durham scored as the pressing Crusaders were caught deep in the Durham zone. This goal changed the momentum as Durham started to dominate play. Their hardwork was rewarded as the 72’s scored both a powerplay and a shorthand­ ed goal to increase their lead to 3-0. A rejuvenated Crusader team hit the ice for the second period. However, sharp goaltending kept the Crusaders at bay until the midway point of the period. Ken Cousin knocked in a rebound with assists going to Troy Pocaluyko and Dave Stephenson, to get the Crusaders on the board. Three minutes later Kevin Deit­ ner deposited a rebound by an exhausted Durham goalie to cut the 72’s lead to 3-2. Assists went to Ken Cousins and Trevor Pocaluy­ ko. A five minute major penalty proved to be costly to the 72 ’ s as the Crusaders scored two powerplay goals to take the lead .Cousins from Deitner and Stephenson notched the first one while Troy Pocaluyko from Stephenson and Cousins accounted for the other. In the third Durham tied the score at the 11-minute mark. However 20 seconds later Ken Cousins completed his hat-trick to give Brussels a 5-4 lead. Assists went to Deitner and Stephenson.
