Crusaders defeat Durham in over-time thriller
The Brussels Crusaders elimi
nated the Durham 72’s Friday
i ight when Dave Montgomery’s
lapshot broke a 5-5 deadlock with
only 49 seconds left in the game.
Since the Crusaders had the best
record during the regular season
they had their choice on whether to
rest or play. They chose to take a
bye to the “A” final and will want
2-3 weeks for a winner to be
selected between Teeswater and
Kincardine.
In the fifth game of the series
played in Brussels on Wednesday

night the Crusaders jumped into an
early lead that they would never
relinquish. Powerplays played a
major role in the Crusaders’ victory
as they scored 4 on the night.
At the midway mark of the first
period Troy Pocaluyko connected
on passes from Ken Cousins and
Dave Stephenson. Thirty seconds
later Rob Cardiff upped the
Crusader lead with assists going to
Hugh Hanlypnd Randy Clarke.
With two minutes left in the period
Len Stamper moved in from the
point to score another powerplay
goal. Assists wentto Brian Ten Pas
and Trevor Pocaluyko. In acquiring
their 3-0 lead the Crusaders
outshot Durham 14 to 10.
Just over two minutes into the
period Brussels scored their third
powerplay goal of the game. Dave
Stephenson scored the goal with
assists going to Ken Cousins and
Dave Montgomery. Durham cut
the Crusader’s lead to 4-2 as they
notched two goals before the
second period ended.
The third period turned out to be
all Crusaders as they dominated
the play. Ken Cousins scored just
seven seconds into the period to
give the Crusaders a 5-2 lead.
Midway through the period Mike
Watson killed any chance Durham
had fora comeback. His powerplay
goal, the Crusaders fourth of the
game was assisted by Paul Mont
gomery. One minute later Kevin
Deitner scored from Ken Cousins
and Trevor Pocaluyko to complete
the scoring. The Crusaders outshot
Durham by a 13 to 3 margin.
The sixth game of the series
played in Durham turned out to be
an exciting and crowd-pleasing
affair. Early in the first period the
Crusaders completely dominated
play outshooting Durham 12 to 3 in
the first ten minutes. However a
sharp Durham goalie turned aside
what looked to be sure Crusader
goals.
Midway through the period
Durham scored as the pressing
Crusaders were caught deep in the
Durham zone. This goal changed
the momentum as Durham started
to dominate play. Their hardwork
was rewarded as the 72’s scored
both a powerplay and a shorthand
ed goal to increase their lead to 3-0.
A rejuvenated Crusader team hit
the ice for the second period.
However, sharp goaltending kept
the Crusaders at bay until the
midway point of the period. Ken
Cousin knocked in a rebound with
assists going to Troy Pocaluyko
and Dave Stephenson, to get the
Crusaders on the board.
Three minutes later Kevin Deit
ner deposited a rebound by an
exhausted Durham goalie to cut
the 72’s lead to 3-2. Assists went to
Ken Cousins and Trevor Pocaluy
ko. A five minute major penalty
proved to be costly to the 72 ’ s as the
Crusaders scored two powerplay
goals to take the lead .Cousins from
Deitner and Stephenson notched
the first one while Troy Pocaluyko
from Stephenson and Cousins
accounted for the other.
In the third Durham tied the
score at the 11-minute mark.
However 20 seconds later Ken
Cousins completed his hat-trick to
give Brussels a 5-4 lead. Assists
went to Deitner and Stephenson.
