Sports Brussels Pre-novice team wins consolation title There goes another one as another Blyth shooter fattens his scoring statistics around the Honeywood net in the first game of the OMHA Midget quarter final series in Blyth Wednesday. Blyth built a 10-0 second period lead and cruised to an 11 -2 win. It was a different story Saturday as Honey wood on home ice, scored an 11-5 win. The teams will play in Honey wood Thursday and Saturday night in Blyth. Midgets' OMHA series tied Wednesday, March 2 saw the Blyth Midgets open their O.M.H. A. quarterfinal series with Honeywood. The Blyth boys seem ed keen and ready for this small Honeywood team. Blyth went to work right from the opening faceoff. Dan McDougall won the draw pulling the puck back to Tim Walden. Tim passed the puck to Larry Hunking who took the puck behind the Honeywood net. He then put the puck on the stick of Dan McDougall. Dan promptly shot the puck between the goalies’ legs to record the first goal of the game. With this goal (only 18 seconds in the game) the Blyth boys took control of the game. Larry and Dan combined on another goal at 10:06 in the first period. Dean Whitfield then scor ed unassisted at 5:12. Larry Hunking closed the scoring in the first period on a fine pass by Kriss Snell. The second period opened with much of ^he same play as Larry and Kriss combined for another goal. Paul Hoggart then scored two goalsthefirst being assisted by Jamie MacDonald and the second by Drew Allen and Dean Whitfield. Dean notched his second goal of the game assisted by Keith Verburg and Jamie MacDonald. Blyth Peewees win 2 Once Blyth Peewees found the win column they seemed determin ed to stay there, recording two more exhibition wins this past week for a three-game winning streak. Monday, Feb. 29 they hosted Wingham “B” team for the first of a home series. Wingham struck first but Blyth tied the game with only two seconds left in the first period when Tyler Craig scored, assisted by Shawn Rutledge. Wingham scored three straight goals in the second period to take a big lead but Blyth chipped away. Rob Finch scored his first goal from Craig Roulston and Brian Van Steelandt at the 8:30 mark then Rob scored again unassisted with just five seconds left in the period. Wingham scored again just five seconds into the third but less than a minute later Kevin Souch scored from Tyler Craig to close the gap. Then Mike McNichol with an assist from Tyler Craig to tie the score. Less than a minute later Kevin Souch scored again from Mike McNichol and Danny VanBakel, to give Blyth its first lead. One minute later Mike McNichol scored from Kevin Souch to give Blyth a two goal lead which was needed Larry Hunking completed his hat-trick for the game assisted by Dan McDougall. Kriss Snell closed the scoring for Blyth assisted by Jason Vanderheyden. After two periods of play Blyth led Honey wood by 10 goals. In the third period Honeywood scored their only two goals of the game while Paul Hoggart notched another goal for Blyth assisted by Keith Verburg and Jamie Mac Donald. Mike Henry played well in net even though he didn’t have much work. He made the best save of the night on a penalty shot. On Saturday afternoon the Blyth boys boarded the bus for a 7:30 game in Honeywood. Honeywood took an early lead in the game but Dean Whitfield assisted by Allen Hillis and Paul Hoggart put Blyth on the scoreboard only nine seconds after the Honeywood goal. Honeywood scored once more before Allen Hillis assisted by Drew Allen and Keith Verburg stuffed the puck past the Honey wood goalie. Honeywood then scored five unanswered goals as the Blyth boys seemed to have some trouble getting into the game. Drew Allen and Tim Walden set up Dan McDougall to put Blyth on the scoreboard in the second because Wingham came back with one more goal to give Blyth a 7-6 victory. In the return game in Wingham Saturday afternoon the Blyth boys may have been suffering from a night out the night before when they took in a London Knights Game in London, because they got off to a sluggish start. After a scoreless first period Wingham got on the board first with a goal three minutes into the second. That lead held up until 5:42 when Ian Atidrews and Rob Finch sent Craig Roulston in on a breakaway and he picked the low corner to the goalie's right to tie the score. With 10:15 left in the third period Wingham took the lead again and held it until there were only four minutes left in the game. Then Conrad Bos took a pass from Shawn Rutledge and spotted Rob Finch in front of the net. He sent a hard pass out to Rob but it never got there as it hit a stick and deflected into the net to tie the game. With under three minutes left Captain Danny VanBakel rushed from his defensive position, shot, then picked up one rebound and putitinthe net to give Blyth the win. period. The score after two periods of play was Honeywood 8, Blyth 3. Blyth came out strong in the third period but a fired up Honeywood goalie kept them off the scoreboard until Jason Vander heyden scored unassisted. Larry Hunking assisted by Drew Allen and Dan McDougall scored to help the Blyth comeback. Honeywood stopped any furhter Blyth effort with some strong defensive play. They scored twice late in the third period to close the scoring at Honeywood 11, Blyth 5. This game shows how important mental attitude is to these young boys. The Blyth team expected an easy game and were overconfi dent. The Honeywood team knew that the only way to win was with hard work and used a good work ethic to beat Blyth. Game 3 will be played on Thursday in Honeywood (game time 8:30) with game 4 in Blyth on Saturday night at 9:00. Game 5 if necessary will be played Sunday afternoon at 3:30 in Honeywood.
