Winners of the Bly th Legion Remembrance Day essay competition were recently presented with their certificates. The winners were in junior competition, [front row, left to right] Mandy Medd, Hallett, third; Jodee Medd, Blyth, second and Marie Cronyn, Blyth, first; [intermediate, second row] Michelle Nesbit, second and Heidi Scrimgeour, first. The awards were presented by competition chairman Mary Lou Stewart [rear]. UCW hosts prayer service The Londesboro United Church Women met at the church on Friday afternoon for the annual World Day of Prayer Service. The theme this year was ‘ ‘Open Doors” and was written by the Women of Brazil. Betty Hulley conducted the service. Others taking part were Margaret Good, Helen Alexander, Mary Peel and Helen Lawson. Mr. Norman Alexander gave a very fitting address on conservation, land use and the environment in our area. Kitty McGregor took up the offering and Gail Lear was pianist for the hymns. Betty Hulley and Margaret Good presented a suitable skit on Ruth and Naomi Mary Peel then took the chair Iiondesboro Compiled by June Fothergill Phone 523-4360 Londesboro 'Loonies' get home-finding tips The third meeting of the ‘‘Lon­ desboro Loonies” was heldon Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. at the home of Joanne Campschroer. The meeting wasopened with the 4H pledge and business was discussed. The main business was the choosing of a title page for the covers of the project books. The rollcallwastonameoneofyour major expenses when you move away from home. Material for the meeting includ­ ed finding a place to live, where to look and what types of housing are available. Next were tips for preparingto view a prospective residence, questions to ask and things you should know: for example, public transportation, building conditions, facilities and utilities provided, etc. Leases, landlord/tenant relations, rent review and utilities were discuss­ ed. Knowledge was then put to the test by a case study on choosing an apartment to suit the members’ needs and preferences. Lastly, roommates sharing ex­ penses and companionship were discussed. Members charted each other on characteristics such as neatness, organization and other habits and characteristics a room­ mate could have. A case study on problems roommates encounter and thanked Betty and her commit­ tee for conducting the service. Mary conducted the business and made several announcements. Thank You’s were read from Margaret Good, Vi and Bob Burns, the Harry Snell Family, Elsie Shaddick and the family of Helen and Jack Lee. Lena Nesbitt represented the U. C. W. at the opening of the Lift in Blyth arena. Kitty McGregor and Betty Hulley are to attend a meeting concerning Hullett Days. Some events coming up during the next few weeks are: April 4 Londesboro U.C. W. regular meet­ ing at 8 p.m.; April 10, Songfest; April 10, Thankoffering at Walton; April 11 and 12, London Confer­ ence United Church Women at and possible solutions was com­ pleted as a group. Information about the Ontario Student Assis­ tance Program was the final topic of discussion. The home activity is to clip out a newspaper ad for a rental unit and think up five questions one could ask if she were interested in renting the unit, also to interview a renter, a student and list problems, costs, and other relevent informa­ tion needed when moving. Burns UCW attends World Prayer service The March Burns U.C.W. was held Friday, March 4. Since it was World Day of Prayer members were invited to share it with Ontario Street Church, Clinton. The theme was “Open Doors”. Everyone followed the pro­ gramme. After the service, the Burns group went to Josephine McGregor’s in Clinton for the meeting. Fourteen members were present. Rene Snell, the new President had a reading* ‘‘This Day is for you.” Minutes of the February meet­ ing were read. Margaret Taylor was not able to be present so Grace United in St. Thomas; April 18, special event in Listowel; June 19-21, Adult Camp. Members are also invited to Holmesville on March 15 to a meeting concerning the Sunshine Foundation. A donation is to be sent to alcohol and drug concerns since no one attended Toe Alpha. Everyone signed a sympathy card for June Fothergill on the passing of her father recently. Lunch was served by Joan Whyte, Helen Lee and Mary Longman. People Mr. and Mrs. Brian Jackson of Fort Frances visited this week with his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Tom Allen. At shuffleboard on Wednesday at Hullett Central School the winner was Audrey Thompson. Sympathy is extended to Roy . and Marie Krauter on the death of his brother Cliff Krauter of Kitch­ ener. Sympathy is extended to the Fothergill family on the death of Mrs. Fothergill’s father, Colonel Marks of Clarkwood Estates nurs­ ing home, Palmerston. He was in his 90th year. There were nine tables of euchre at the Londesboro hall on Friday evening. Winners were: ladies’ high, Trudy Pollard; ladies’ lone hands, Jean Scott; ladies’ low, Ruby Dolmage, Seaforth; men’s high, Roy Krauter; men’s lone hands, Frank Konarski; men’s low, Reg Lawson. The next euchre is Friday, March 18 at 8 p.m. Jean Scott visited with Mrs. Annie Reid of Walton on Saturday. treasurer’s report was given by Gay Salverda. Jean Scott read two invitations for Easter Thankoffer­ ing the U.C.W. had received: both for the same day, April 10: Blyth at 8 p.m. and Walton at 7:30 p.m. It was left to anyone who could attend either of them. The copper contest will be at next meeting. Gloria McEwing and Beryl Reid will be captains with 11 on each team. Get well cards were signed for Jean Leiper and Mrs. Rice. An Easter lily is to be placed in Londesboro Church for Easter Sunday. Kay Konarski invited members to her home in April.
