Blyth players spent a lot of time around the Shallow Lake net [that Is when they and their opponents weren't in the penalty box] as Blyth Midgets scored an easy 6-1 win over their northern visitors in a rough game in Blyth Sunday. Blyth has a two-game lead in the best of five series with the third game in Shallow Lake Thursday. Blyth Midgets take first Sports Bonspiel held at Brussels The Brussels Stockyards Bon­ spiel was held on February 15 at the arena. The winners of the 9a.m. draw were: first with 53.25 points, Wally Ballagh, Ron Hill, Duffy Colvin, and Ken McDonald; se­ cond with 42 points, Stu Bryans, Cliff Campbell, Don Riehl and Glen Ballantyne; third with 39 points, Ern Lewington, Doug Kirkby, Bill McClure and Ron McCallum. Consolation went to the team of Bob Blackwell, Harold Elphich, Jack Scott and Jim MacTavish. The winners of the 11 a.m. draw were: first with 51 points, Doug Rathwell, Don Strachan, Paul Smith and Murray Fischer; second with 44 75 noints, Gordon Roul- ston, Bill Rutledge, Wayne Fitz­ gerald and Murray Culbert; third with 38.25 points, Fred Knechtel, George Steven, Joe Martin and Stewart Knechtel. Consolation went to Mervyn Bauer, Orval Bauer, Brian Warwick and Bill Edgar. The winner of the Overall Trophy for the day was the team of Wally Ballagh, Ron Hill, Duffy Calvin and Ken McDonald with 53.25 points. The Brussels Curling Club will be holding the Huron Feed System and Brussels Agromart Ltd. After a long ride the Blyth boys were tired and couldn’t get their bodies moving together. This enabled Shallow Lake to score early in the first period. Midway through the first Dean Whitfield finally put Blyth on the scoreboard with a nice passing play from Paul Hoggart and Dan McDougall. After the goalies changed ends for the second period Dan McDou­ gall set Larry Hunking in the clear. Larry shot the puck low and hard as he baffled the Shallow Lake goalie completely. Shallow Lake replied with their own good effort as they came back and scored a short-han­ ded goal. Blyth regained the lead once more as Keith Verburg set Dan McDougall in the front of the Shallow Lake net. Dan promptly beat the goalie. Shallow Lake came back once more to tie the game at three after two periods. Both teams had a well deserved rest but Blyth came out in the third period with more determination. Drew Allenand Dan McDougall assisted on a goal by Larry Hunking. Keith Verburg and Jason VanderHeyden assisted on a goal by Dean Whitfield. Shallow Lake closed the gap to within one goal at 7:56 of the third period. Blyth seemed to take life from the Shallow Lake surge as 16 seconds later Keith Verburg assisted by Allen Hillis and Jason Vander Heyden put Blyth ahead by two once more. Jason Vander Heyden closed the scoring at 5:30 of the third period with a solo effort. Final score Blyth 7, Shallow Lake 4. Game two of the best of five series was to be played in Shallow Lake on Saturday morning but once more Mother Nature put a screw in the plans. This game was cancelled and the two teams met on Sunday at 4:30 in Blyth.
