2 games in playoff series
The Blyth Midgets opened their
W.O.A.A. final series in Shallow
Lake on Thursday evening.
After a long ride the Blyth boys
were tired and couldn’t get their
bodies moving together. This
enabled Shallow Lake to score
early in the first period. Midway
through the first Dean Whitfield
finally put Blyth on the scoreboard
with a nice passing play from Paul
Hoggart and Dan McDougall.
After the goalies changed ends
for the second period Dan McDou
gall set Larry Hunking in the clear.
Larry shot the puck low and hard as
he baffled the Shallow Lake goalie
completely. Shallow Lake replied
with their own good effort as they
came back and scored a short-han
ded goal.
Blyth regained the lead once
more as Keith Verburg set Dan
McDougall in the front of the
Shallow Lake net. Dan promptly
beat the goalie. Shallow Lake came
back once more to tie the game at
three after two periods.
Both teams had a well deserved
rest but Blyth came out in the third
period with more determination.
Drew Allenand Dan McDougall
assisted on a goal by Larry
Hunking. Keith Verburg and
Jason VanderHeyden assisted on a
goal by Dean Whitfield. Shallow
Lake closed the gap to within one
goal at 7:56 of the third period.
Blyth seemed to take life from the
Shallow Lake surge as 16 seconds
later Keith Verburg assisted by
Allen Hillis and Jason Vander
Heyden put Blyth ahead by two
once more. Jason Vander Heyden
closed the scoring at 5:30 of the
third period with a solo effort. Final
score Blyth 7, Shallow Lake 4.
Game two of the best of five
series was to be played in Shallow
Lake on Saturday morning but once
more Mother Nature put a screw in
the plans.
This game was cancelled and the
two teams met on Sunday at 4:30 in
Blyth. Blyth seemed keen to play
and quickly took a large lead over
