Blyth Atoms lead playoff series BY RUSTY BLADES After being eliminated in the O.M.H.A. playoffs, the Blyth Atoms dropped back to play in the W.O.A.A. playoffs where they are paired with Zurich. The first game was played in Blyth last Wednesday, February 17. The Blyth team played listless ly through the first half of the game before Brian McNichol issued a one-man wake up call in the third period as he provided the margin of victory in a 7-4 game. Zurich built a 3-0 lead early in the game due to some lethargic play by the Blyth squad. Blyth cut the lead to 3-2 late in the second frame as Brian McNichol recorded his first goal of the game and Michael Bromley notched Blyth’s second goal with assists from Ryan Chamney and Peter Craig. Zurich upped the count to 4-2 early in the third before Brian McNichol put on a heroic shooting display to steal the victory for Blyth. This robust Blyth dynamo scored an astonishing five straight goals in less than six minutes as his wicked shot found the top corner of the net, a spot that the Zurich goaltender couldn’t seem to cover. Jerrod Button picked up assists on two goals while Jonathan Collins and Henry Bos collected single assists.
