Blyth United hosts scouting groups The Beavers, Cubs, Brownies and Girl Guides, with their leaders Mary Lou Stewart, Dianne Fergu­ son, Joan Clark, Brenda Burkhold- er/t?arol Gross and Herb Shannon worshipped in Blyth United Church. Four boys from the Grade five Sunday School class read the scripture and brought symbols described by the scripture lesson. They were John Ramirez, lan Caldwell, Jamie McNichol and Aaron Sauve. Rev. Ramirez used these sym­ bols which were a loaf of bread and stones to explain Jesus’ tempta­ tions following his 40 days fast in the wilderness. They sang, “Jesus went about doing good. ’ ’ Patsy Mary Shobbrook and Graeme McDowell had the high scores when the weekly Monday night euchre party was held at Blyth Memorial Hall. Lillian Riehl and Joe Holmes had the low scores while Vera Hesselwood and Char­ lie Bromley had the most lone hands. Pearl Bromley won the special prize. There were 10 tables of players for the evening. Eight tables were in play Wednesday night at the weekly Lost Heir card party. Ora Bruce and Harvey Sillib had the high scores while Blanche Hoegy and Charlie Smith had the low scores. Cliff Hoegy won the special prize. The choir sang, “There is sunshine in my soul today.’’ Rev. Ramirez speaking on “Jesus’ victory over temptation’ ’, said that because of his close relationship with his father he didn’t give in to temptation.’’ He pointed out that Jesus never used this power for himself but always for others. He concluded by asking that during this season of Lent that we remember the power God can give us to overcome temptation. A pot of beautiful yellow mums was given in memory of Archie Youngby Betty, Ray and James Lair. Greeters were Bill and Susan Howson. Ushers were Chris Snell, and Christina Roulston were among the Ontario students who left last week for a three-month exchange to homes in Quebec. They were completing the return visit after Quebec students spent three months here in the fall. They travelled to Toronto Thurs­ day where they stayed overnight and held meetings with organizers of the exchange. Friday they travelled by bus to Montreal where the group split up for various destinations. Tanya travelled to Farnham, Quebec to visit Pascale McLean. Christina, who had one of the longest trips, had her flight delayed by bad weather and didn’t arrive in Baie Comeau (Brian Mulroney’s home town) until late and reached Riviere Portneuf, her final destination, at 1 a.m. Satur­ day. She reports snow piled to the eaves of houses, the most snow her exchange partner Marie Eve Bou­ chard can ever recall in the community on the north shore of the St. Lawrence. were led by Chris Bolger. PAGE 3. Harve McDowell heads Horticulture Society The Blyth Horticulture Society Executive meeting was held on Feb. 9, 1988 at the home of Harve and Feme McDowell. The new slate of officers for 1988 is as follows: President, Harve McDowell; first vice-president, Mary Walden; second vice-presi­ dent, Harve McCallum; secretary, Alma Madill; treasurer, Vera Hesselwood; directors, 2 years, John Hesselwood, Dan Mclnnes, Alvin Snell, Gene Snell, Graeme McDowell; director, 1 year, Mar­ jorie East, Ted East, Sheron Stadelmann, Jack Blake, Rita Blake. At the close of the meeting the hostess served a delicious lunch which was enjoyed by all.
