Colour-coded garbage may save tax dollars Blyth residents will soon receive coloured stickers to allow them to identify burnable from unburnable garbage, Blyth council was told at its Feb. 9 meeting. Councillor Lloyd Sippel said the stickers were almost ready and a letter explaining the process and a number of stickers would be mailed to all Blyth residences. In addition, he said, identifica tion cards will be issued to all Blyth and Hullett residents which they will have to present when using the landfill site shared by the two municipalities. The cards are to Blyth restaurant changes hands A familiar Blyth business chan ged hands when a new family took over the former Kate’s Kitchen. Barbara Walsh is the new owner of the Sunoco station and restau rant that will now be called Walsh’s Corner Cafe. The restaurant and gas bar will be managed by Larry Walsh with the help of Pat Jenkins. Lisa Bailey and Mike McDonald. The Walsh family officially took possession Monday. The Walshs will continue to be the local bus depot but plan to expand the food operation. Presen tly fast foods are available but in the coming weeks full-scale din ners will be added. Larry Walsh, nanagerof Walsh’s Comer Cafe took over the running of the business Monday morning after his wife Barbara bought the business from Kate McLellan, who ran Kate’s Kitchen at the main street Blyth location. prevent people from outside the communities from using the site and driving up costs without paying taxes.***** The problem of merchants and business employees parking on main street was brought before council again. A complaint about employee cars taking up room on main street which store customers should have was received and a suggestion was made a parking by-law should be passed. “Passing a by-law is one thing,” said Councillor Sippel, “enforcing it is another.” The other council lors agreed that enforcement would be a problem. Instead council agreed to send a letter to all core-area businesses asking them to encourage employees to use off-street parking lots and leave street parking for customers.***** Council voted to give $40, the same as last year, to the Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels School Fair but after some second thoughts, it appeared next year the organiza tion might expect more. After the motion approving the grant and other grants had passed, Council lor William Manning wondered if perhaps the size of the grant shouldn’t be increased. He noted the council had voted a grant of SlOOto the Huron County Plow men’s Association and doubted there were many plowmen in the village but there were a lot of children who use the fair. “Ilook at this a little different because there are a lot of children involved,” he said. He also noted this is the only school fair left in the province. Council also agreed to a grant of $375 for the Wingham and District Association for the Mentally Re tarded but turned down a request from Family and Children’s Ser vices, Huron County since it felt the village already supporting the agency through taxes to the county. A delegation from the Blyth Festival was on hand to brief council on the latest activities and ask that council give the same grant as last year. Council later approved the requested grant of $1,500. ***** Council voted to support a resolution from Hullett asking the county road department to install concession numbers and/or street names on all roadways joining county highways. Councillor Manning pointed out it would make it easier for visitors to find their way in rural areas while Councillor William Howson said it would help delivery vehicles. ***** Permission was given by council for Murray Siertsema to sever two lots from his farm property on Gypsy Lane to allow building of two houses, one for himself and one for his son. ***** Two Blyth businesses have put forward proposals to be considered for the Opportunity Tour of foreign investors this September. No decision has been made yet as to whether Blyth will be included in the tour, Councillor Bev Elliott of the Business and Tourism Com mittee told council.
