Midgets score big win in first playoff game The Blyth Midgets opened their first playoff series for the season on Wednesday, Feb. 3 in the Zurich arena. The Zurich team was short some Radford Overloads keep busy schedule January 28the Radford Over­ loads Oldtimer Hockey team tra­ velled to Ayton Ontario to play the Ay ton Old timers in what turned out to be a solid win for the Blyth team. This was a game in which the Overloads controlled the play from the drop of the puck to the final buzzer. Excellent performances were put in Wayne McDougall for fivegoalswith the assistance of Rick (Digger) Finch. The game was one which appeared to lift the spirits of the Oldtimers as their record of more recent date appears to have a slight tinge of Blue and White. The enthusiasm and excitement of this win over Ayton Oldtimers, however, did not last long as Radford Overloads travelled Janu­ ary 30, Saturday night to Wingham where they had a return match againstwhatturnedouttobea very strong Wingham Goodtimers team, lead by the outstanding goaltending of Ray Baynton. Although the score was lopsided being 12-4 for Wingham, Blyth players due to school commitments so they had three Bantams playing that night. Things didn’tget off to a good start for Blyth as Allen Hillis received a holding penalty at the gave some very strong efforts and had numerous opportunities, how­ ever, were not able to capitalize. This would not be the only disappointment for the Overloads in the recent string of games as the scheduled game for January 31 at 4:30 p.m. in the Blyth arena against the Oldtimers from Hen- sall was not to take place, as for some unknown reason the Hensall Oldtimers did not show. On Saturday, Feb. 6 the Overloads hosted the Grand Bend Oldtimers. The Overloads avenged an earlier loss to Grand More sports on page 38 Bend by winning 11 to 4. the Overloads play in Clinton on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 against the Clinton Foul Ups. / 13:31 mark of the first period. The Zurichboys put the pressure on Blyth but Mike Henry was able to stop them every time. Larry Hunking passed the puck to Kriss Snell as he was breaking down the ice to set him up on a clear breakaway. Kriss made no mistake as he put the puck between the Zurich goalies pads. This resulted in Kriss’s first short-handed goal of the night. With this incentive the Blyth boys continued to totally dominate the Zurich team in all aspects of the game. Dan McDougall scored at 11:07 of the frist, assisted by Kriss Snell. Lions Bonspiei held at Brussels Curling dub The Brussels Curling Club held the Lion’s Men’s Bonspiei on February 1. The winning teams on the 9 a. m. draw were: first with 53.25 points, Ernie Lewington, Gord Mitchell, Blair Dickson and Neil Hemingway; second with 39.35 points, Ross Engel, Ken Bender, Rudy Plug and Isaac Martin; third with 39 points, Orval Bauer, Mervyn Bauer, Bill Edgar and Brian Warwick; fourth with 27.25points, Lester Glanville, Ken Dalton, Paul McCallum and Neil Beuermann. The winning teams on the 11 o’clock draw were: first with 54 points, Doug Rathwell, Stew Kriss then took the puck from the deep in his own end and moved back and forth through all the Zurich players to scored his second short-handed goal. Keith Verburg then scored assisted by Jason VanderHeyden. — Midway through the second period Dan McDougall setup Larry Hunking and 26 seconds later Kriss Snell and Larry Hunking set up Dan McDougall. Zurich spoiled Mike’s bid for a shutout as Blyth was caught making a bad line change. Scott Bell set up younger brother John to put Zurich on the score board at 5:10 of the second Steiss, Jim Patterson and Harvey Machan with Mervyn Quipp curl­ ing in the third game; second with 37.75 points, Ross Veitch, George Stevens, Mac McIntosh and Danny Bentley; third with 36.75 points, Bob Alexander, Brad Speiran, Tom Warwick and Fred Smith. Consolation went to the team of Fred Knechtel, Bill Dowd, Dan Gascho and Joe Martin. The winner of the Over-all trophy for the day was the team of Doug Rathwell, Stew Steiss, Jim Patterson, Harvey Machan and Mervyn Quipp. TheBrussels Stockyards Ltd. Men’s Bonspiei will be held on Monday, February 15. period. This closed the scoring for the second period and both teams went back in the dressing rooms to rest and set up for the third period. Blyth quickly showed Zurich they were not finished yet as Larry Hunking scored three times in the third period for a perfect hat trick. Dan McDougall and Kriss Snell set up his first goal. The second went unassisted while Dan assisted the third goal. Zurich closed the scoring with four minutes left in the game. Mike Henry played a solid game in net in spite of the fact that he was cold from lack of action. The final score was Blyth, 9 - Zurich, 2. The next game in this best of five series was to be played in Blyth, Sunday afternoon at 4:30 but this game was cancelled due to bad weather. The next game will now be played Wednesday night in Zurich at8:30 p.m. game three will be Saturday, Feb. 13 at 2:30 in Blyth and Game Four Sunday, February 14 at 4:30 in Blyth if necessary.
