Beautiful furniture can also be practical as this bed sofa proves, folding out into a queen sized bed. Delightful punches will please non-drinkers at reception Furniture helps rooms serve dual purposes Long on love but short on space, many newlywed couples are look ing for an alternative to the often non-existent guest room. The solution? The sleep sofa, which statistics indicate has risen in use by 800 percent in just one decade. As the dominant piece of furniture in an often-used room, the sleep sofa’s appearance and durability are key. “How a piece of upholstery looks can be an indica tion of how well it is made inside, ’ ’ Britten notes. With that in mind, she has produced a checklist to help the newlywed host and hostess choose the sleep sofa that will serve them - and their overnight guests - well. First, Britten suggests you inspect the outside. Look for armcaps and reversible seat cush ions for long-lasting wear; tug at the buttons, seams and threads to be sure nothing loosens, puckers or sags. Check, too, to be sure the welting is straight, and that patterns and plaids are matched properly at the seams. The skirt, if there is one, should be lined for a tailored appearance and toeliminate unwanted bulges - especially at the corners. Candles are captivating What can be more captivating than candles? Sparkling candle holders set the romantic mood of an evening by candlelight. You can choose from lustrous and graceful hurricane lamps to traditional handblown crystal candlesticks. And for the practical bride, three-way candle holders can be turned on end to tastefully display either tapers or two or three-inch candles. And be sure the fabric is durable, since it takes more wear and tear than an ordinary sofa. Next, ask about the inside, and try it out for comfort. Do the seat and back have sinuous wire springs that bounce back with you, and is the frame kiln-dried hardwood that is double-dowelled for maximum strength? The sleeper mechanism should be easy to operate and made of fatigue-tested steel for long wear and, for comfort’s sake, the mattress should be of either polyurethane or innerspring con struction with a support system thateliminates middle “roll to gether.” This kind of thoughtful once over will assure newlyweds of a good investment, and guests of a good night’s sleep for many years to come.
