UCWs petition against Sunday shopping At the annual meeting on January 25 of Huron-Perth Presby- terial of the United Church Wo man, a petition was circulated and signed requesting David Peterson to accept provincial responsibility for decisions regarding Sunday store openings, and further not to extend these beyond present limits. Wesley-Willis United Church, Clinton, welcomed the 249 dele gates from the two counties. The report from Doris Miller of the World Outreach Committee show ed that contributions had helped to purchase 900 pounds of vegetable seeds worth $10,000 for distribu tion in Africa - to refugees from Angola, and to the Church-in-the- Bush. A small balance was sold at reasonable prices to local farmers. One black-skinned onion variety is known as “Black Gold’’ because the harvest from $1.50 worth of seed will pay a child’s school costs for a full year! Other reports showed that Unit ed Church Women are involved in a wide range of Canadian concerns - practical help was offered to Optimism Place, Stratford, and House of Friendship in Goderich; to nursing homes and shut-ins, Meals on Wheels, and to the bereaved in individual congrega tions. The slogan will appear with a heart motif - symbolizing affec tion and life itself - on posters and other promotional materials being produced jointly by the Ministry of Culture and Communications and The Ontario Heritage Foundation. “For many of us, heritage is really a very personal thing, ’ ’ said Minister of Culture and Communi cations Lily Oddie Munro. “It is all those tangible and intangible elements which make up the context within which we have developed our society and within which we ourselves have develop ed. For some, it is a special among topics studied during 1987. Those who have heard her report of a visit to a mission in Cuernavaca, Mexico, know that Muriel will bring back a vivid account of conditions in Ethiopia. Warm appreciation to the out going President, Alma Langford of Exeter, was shown by presenta tion ofa Life Membership pin, and a standing ovation. Her successor is Helen Anderson, of Tavistock, who is also Chairperson of Ladies’ Programme for the International Ploughing Match next September in Perth county.
