Hensail did a good job checking to hold Blyth to one goal in a 5-1 win. Clinton B's Blyth Peewees tuned up for the playoffs by entertaining Clinton Peewee “B”s January 25 and playing to an exciting 3-3 tie. Blyth took lead in the second period when Kevin Souch scored at 6:12, set up by Tyler Craig. Clinton came back with 3:27 left in the period to tie the score, but Kevin Souch went to work again with just 20 seconds left, assisted by Brian VanSteelandt and Mike McNichol togiveBlythalead going into the third period. Blyth looked like it might be on its way to its first victory of the year when Conrad Bos gave them a two goal-lead, assisted by Danny Van Bakel less than four minutes into the period. But Clinton came back with goals by Mark Falconer and Nick Wieckowski (a former team­ mate of the Blyth players) to tie the final score at 3-3. The Saturday before, January 23, the two teams had met in Clinton with Clinton scoring an empty-net goal to salt away a 5-2 win. Clinton built up an early 3-0 lead before Blyth bounced back in the second period with a goal by Danny VanBakcl, assisted by Rob Finch. Clinton scored again before Kevin Souch scored an unassisted goal to give Blyth hope again. But Clinton scored with just eight seconds left to seal the victory. Brussels Bantams win consolation crown McArter gets 6 pts. in tie BY LOIS McARTER The Junior D Bulls travelled to Lucan on Wednesday nightfora rare mid-week hockey game. They were minus several of the regular players but had the lines bolstered by the midgets. The team came home on the losing side of a 6-1 game with Mike Chapman coming up with the Bulls’ only goal. The team returned to Exeter on Friday night to play the Hawks. It proved to be a see-saw battle. The teams had played 7:42 of the first period when Kevin McArter finally beat the goalie on passes from teammates Ron Strome and Bill Haines as they made their power play effort pay off. There was 2:20 left on the clock when Exeter came back on a power play attack to beat goalie Greg McCle­ ment and tie the score at one. They had played three minutes of the second period when Exeter we nt ahead 2-1. The Bulls came back just 32 seconds later when Tim Fritz scored from Brian Campbell and Doug Taylor for Brussels’ second power play goal. Exeter scored goals with 11:06 and 6:15 on the clock and then just 18 seconds later added their third unanswered goal in five minutes of play to take what looked like a sound 5-2 lead. Jeff McGavin then replaced goalie Greg McClement in the Brussels net for the remainder of the game. At 4:51 Kevin Lee scored from linemates Kevin McArter and Bill Haines to gain one goal but Exeter came back a minute later to regain their three goal lead at 6-3, at the end of the second period. The Bulls must have regrouped during their break as they cam back strong in the third period. Tim Fritz and Kevin McArter combined for a power play goal after 4:16 of the third period. Play continuedfor lOminutes when Tim Fritz scored his second goal after being set up by Ron Strome and Kevin McArter. There was 2:50left on the clock when Ron Strome scored from Mike Vincent and Kevin McArter to tie the score at six. It only took 30 seconds for Exeter to catch the Brussels defence out of position and go in and score on Jeff with a slap shot, to take the lead once more. The Bulls salvaged a tie with just 30 seconds remaining in the game, when Bill Haines blasted a shot into the net after receiving a drop pass from Kevin McArter and Tim Fritz. NOSPARKLE The team was at home on Sunday afternoon to the visiting Seaforth Centennaires. They must have spent all their energies on Friday night in Exeter because they sure didn’t have any sparkle in this game. Seaforth scored the only goal of the first period and their second goal just two minutes into the second period. It was mid-way through the period when Mike Chapman scored unassisted for a short-handed goal to put the Bulls on the scoreboard. Seaforth came back with two more goals at 5:45 and 3:07 to take a 4-1 lead. Brussels then made a goalie change putting McGavin in to replace McClement. Seaforth added one more goal before the period ended to hold a 5-1 lead at the end of the second. They added one more goal 20 seconds into the third period. Play continued until the 6:17 mark when Mike Vincent scored for the Bulls from Tim Fritz and Kevin McArter. Aroundthefive minute mark, the coaches pulled the goalie in favour of an extra attacker, which didn’t pay off as Seaforth was allowed to score an empty net goal at the 3:30 mark. The game ended 7-2 in Sea­ forth’s favour. The Bulls will return to Seaforth for a re-schedul­ ed game on Tuesday night. They will be in Mitchell on Friday night for an 8:30 start. There will be no home game on Sunday. The executive made three $50 lottery draws. The winners were Lois Todd, Ken and Dawn White and Noreen Eder all of Brussels. The $100 draw of the month for January was won by Bob Johnston of Zurich. The weekly 50-50 draw was wonby John Steffler of Walton for $46. BANTAM B’S LOSE SERIES The Bantam “B” team played their second game with Clifford on Wednesday night in playoff action. There was 8:25 on the clock when Brussels’ Greg Mulvey scored from Brian McArter to give Brussels a 1-0 lead. There was 2:44 left on the clock when Clifford scored to tie the game and then just 39 seconds later went ahead 2-1. Clifford scored the only goal in the second period of play. Brussels scored at 14:37 of the third with Gregy Mulvey tipping in a shot from Shawn Jacklin to narrow the gap. Clifford scored two more goals in the last five minutes of play to win the game and the series. Saturday, Jan. 30 the Brussels Bantams I’s participated in the Paisley Bantam Tournament. The first game was against Wiarton who were out to play hockey. They handed Brussels its first defeat, winning 5-4 and putting Brussels in the consolation round. Jamie Nicholson and Robin Henschel scored two goals each for Brussels with assists going to Darren Johnston, Scott Johnston, Steve Fritz and Andrew McCut­ cheon. Chesley were Brussels’ second opponents and this proved to be another close and exciting game with Brussels winning 5-3. Steve McCutcheon assisted by Jason Koetsier, and Jamie Nicholson, Brent Evans assisted by Steve McCutcheon and Dan Beuermann and Robin Henschell assisted by Steven Fritz and Koetsier put Brussels ahead 3-0. But a determined Chesley team wouldn’t give up. Steve Fritz assisted by Darren Johnston and Brian Alexander scored what proved to be the winning goal. Fritz also scored the assurance goal assisted by Nicholson and Koet­ sier. The Consolation Championship game was played against a fiesty Tara team with only nine players. The game was much more exciting than the 7-1 score indicated. Scoringfor Brusselswas Shawn Jacklin assisted by Koetsier; Dan Beuermann assisted by Brent Evans. Steven Fritz scored two, one unassisted and the other assisted by Nicholson and Shawn Jacklin; Andrew McCutcheon as­ sisted by Evans; Darren Johnston unassisted and Robin Henschel assisted by D. Neil Beuermann Construction 887-9598 Chris Howson injured as Blyth Atoms beat Seaforth B's BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms only had one exhibition game on the agenda last week as Seaforth 11 came to Blyth last Wednesday, January 27. Blyth controlled the play in the first period as they built a 3-0 lead. Henry Bos, who played a few shifts at left wing, assisted on the first two Blyth goals as his centremen, Michael Bromley, finished off both plays with wicked wrist shots. Blyth’s third goal of the game was scored by Ryan Chamney as he stuffed home a rebound after being set up by linemates Brian McNich­ ol and Christopher Howson. Blyth built a 4-0 lead early in the second frame as James McNichol scored on a goalmouth scramble with Henry Bos recording his third assist of the game. Blyth increased their lead to5-0 with one minute and one second left in the second period.
