The Bly th Legion honoured an ongoing commitment to Blyth Minor Hockey on Monday night when Legion Vice-President John Battye presented the Blyth Midgets with bright new jerseys for all players. On hand for the occasion were [from left] Midget Coach Kurt Whitfield, Assistant Captain Paul Hoggart, Mr. Battye, Captain Larry Hunking, Assistant Captain Dan McDougall, Tony Van Bakei, president of the Blyth Minor Hockey and Ringette Clubs, and Midget Assistant Coach and trainer Ralph Datema. Blyth Midgets end season, prepare for playoffs Crusaders post 2 big weekend wins The Brussels Crusaders reeled off two important victories over the weekend as they continue their quest for first place in the WOAA Intermediate Southern Division. On Friday night they travelled to Arthur to face the Tigers. Brussels came out fired up in the first period and completely dominated play. Three minutes into the game Ken Cousins opened the scoring with the assist going to Dave Stephen­ son. Three minutes later Troy Pocaluyko upped the score to 2-0 as he connected on a pass from Dave Montgomery. With two minutes left in the period Troy potted his second goal of the game converting a passfrombrotherTrevor. Rob Cardiff completed the first period scoring as he was sent in all alone on the Arthur goalie by Paul Mont­ gomery. In the first period the Crusaders outshot Arthur 15 to 5. The second period started out much like the first with the Crusaders buzzing the Arthur goal. Six minutes into the period Kevin Deitner took a pass from Dave Stephenson to increase Brussels’ lead to5 - 0. However after that the goals came fast and furious. In the next two minutes Arthur cut Brussels lead to 5 to 2. Dave Montgomery scored an unassisted marker midway through the period to increase the Crusaders lead to 6 - 2. However the Crusaders seemed to go to sleep for the remainder of the period and Arthur scored three unanswered goals to cut the Crusader lead to 6-5. The shots on goal in the second period were even with each team counting 12 apiece. Midway through the third period Arthur tied the score. This seemed to wake the Crusaders up as they dominatedthefinal lOminutes. With seven and a half minutes remainingTroy Pocaluykocom- pleted his hat trick on a pass from Rob Cardiff. Two minutes later Dave Stephenson on a pass from Dave Montgomery increased the Crusader lead to two goals. Troy Pocaluyko with his fourth of the game finished the scoring with an empty net goal on passes from Dave Montgomery and Brian TenPas to give the Crusaders a 9 to 6victory. Inthe third period the Crusaders outshot Arthur 13 to 8. BEST GAME OF SEASON On Sunday night the Crusaders faced the first place Wellesley Merchants. Ater an hour delay waiting for the referees to arrive, the game started. The patient fans were treated to the best hockey game of the season. In the first period both teams played cautiously. Midway through the period Dave Mont­ gomery converted a pass from a 1 -0 lead. Late in the period the Merchants tied the score on a rebound. The second period was the best period of hockey for the Crusaders this year as skating became the main thrust of the game. Midway through the period Dave Stephen­ son blasted a shot home on passes from Ken Cousins and Kevin Dietner. The Crusaders continued to skate hard and up their lead to 3-1 when Kevin Dietner scored on passes from Dave Stephenson and Trevor Pocaluyko. In the third period the Crusaders increased their lead to 4-1 when Troy Pocaluyko scored on passes from Dave Montgomery and Ste­ ward Cardiff. Late in the period Wellesley scored to cut the Crusa­ der lead to 4 - 2. During the game the Crusaders outshot Wellesley 32 to 28. Mike Smith played a solid game in net for the Crusaders. The victory kept the Crusaders first place hopes alive. Next weekend the Crusaders play in Seaforth on Friday and in Milver­ ton on Sunday. On Saturday, Feb. 6 the Crusaders are sponsoring a dance. Don’t forget to come out and have a great time supporting your team. Tickets are available from any player or executive member. The Blyth Midgets have finished playing their regular games. Blyth opened the first period scoring at 8:53 from Benji Hakkers assisted by Brad Walsh. As plays continued from one to the other, Zurich scored at the 3:01 mark ending first period 1-1. Joe Fraser scored Blyth’s se­ cond goal just two minutes iuto the second period assisted by Marc Bricker and Aaron Sauve, but Zurich came back to score at the 5:12 mark and once more one minute later taking the lead 3-2. With only 49 seconds left in the second period Marc Bricker scored assisted by Benji Hakkers to tie the game up 3-3. In the third period most of the shots were taken on the Zurich net. Blyth’s Scott Arthur scored the fourth goal of the game assisted by Tim Lyons, while 30 seconds later games with one tied, seven wins and 16 losses. The Midgets start their playoffs beginning this week. They will travel to Zurich on Wednesday, February 3 for a 8:30 game and Zurich will come back to Blyth on Sunday, February 7 for a 4:30 game. It will be the best 3 out of 5 games. The Midgets will be wearing their new sweaters spon­ sored by the Royal Canadian Legion, Blyth Branch 420. Marc Bricker scored again assisted by Aaron Sauve giving Blyth the win of 5-3. SNOWMOBILE POKER RALLY ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7/88 Registration 11a.m.-2 p.m.atthe Walton Hall Hands$4.00each. Blyth Tykes lose dose game to Zurich On Saturday, January 30 the Zurich Tykes came to Blyth for a super hockey game. These two evenly matched teams are battling it out for top spot in the league. This was like play-off hockey as both teams showed great effort. Scott Bromley did the goal-tending duties for Blyth, as both team’s goalies were great. Zurich jumped out, for 2, first period goals and narrowly kept the lead to the dying minutes of the game. Final score was Zurich 4, Blyth 2. Scoring Blyth’s first goal was Corey Shannon with Michael Ansley setting him up. Blyth’s second goal was scored by Darryl Bromley on along rush, with Corey Shannon picking up the assist.
