Ontario Farm-Start
More farmers eligible
Changes in Ontario Farm-Start
could make more potential new
farmers eligible for the program.
Agriculture and Food Minister
Jack Riddell announced recently.
Farm-Start, which provides an
nual grants to new farmers,
originally considered all persons
sharing a principal residence as
one entity for purposes of apply
ing.
“The change made to the
program will notpermit a son or
daughter living at hom< to apply
foragranttoassistthem in starting
a new farm business or in acquiring
a share of his or her parent’s
farm,’’ Riddell said.
“This will encourage the trans
fer of a farm from parent to child
without requiring that the new
farmer establish a separate resi
dence,” he said.
However, grants will not be paid
where it appears that the grant will
benefit an established farm opera
tion. Thus, a new farmer is not
eligible if he or she establishes a
partnership or shareholder rela
tionship with an established farm
er who is not his or her parent.
The $90 million Ontario Farm-
Start program provides a total of
$38,000 in grants over a seven-year
period to qualified new farmers.
The program began January 1,
1988 and will be open for applica
tions for five years.
Aim is for better Wl meetings
Achieving more interesting
meetings was the aim of a
workshop held at Centralia College
of Agricultural Technology recent
ly. Held for Women’s Institute
District Program Co-ordinators of
the London Area, it was conducted
jointly by Mrs. Hilde Morden of
R.R. No. 2, Rodney, Federated
Women’s Institute of Ontario
Program Co-ordinator and Mrs.
Grace Campbell of R.R. No. 1, Iona
Station, London Area Women’s
Institutes Program Co-ordinator.
The workshop was held as a
result of changes made in the
F.W.I.O. constitution that recom
mends each Branch have a Pro
gram Co-ordinator and committee
rather than several Committee
Convenors.
The theme “Waste Manage
ment” was stressed and Program
Co-ordinators from the 10 Districts
in London Area received guidance,
inspiration and insight into pro
gram planning and reporting.
Information and material was
provided for all those attending to
enable them to conduct a similar
workshop for their Branch Pro
gram Co-ordinators.
Content of the workshop is
available from the F.W.I.O. office
at the Guelph Agriculture Centre,
Box 1030, Guelph, Ontario. N1H
