AIDS education to start in Catholic schools An AIDS education program for students of the Huron-Perth Ro man Catholic Separate School Board (HPRCSSB) will soon get underway, the board was told atits regular January session. A committee headed by reli gious education family life consul tant Dennis Mackey and John McCauley, superintendent of edu cation, has been preparing a program which will add AIDS education to the present religion and family life program. The mandatory program, scheduled to begin next month, will start at the Grades 7 and 8 levels, and will be taught again in Grade 10. The program has been approved by all bishops in Ontario and by all Catholic school boards, and is taught on three levels - medical, moral and social. Medically, the program teaches the clinical facts about AIDS, Mr. Mackey said, while morally it deals with sexual responsibility and socially, it teaches students to have compassion for victims of the disease and how certain lifestyles contribute to its spread. “The program is going back to the importance of abstinence and faithfulness,’’ he said. “There is more to morality than simply taking precautions.’’ The new program will also provide instruction to all teachers who will be using it, as well as providing instruction to other teachers and board members who may be interested. It also gives parents a chance to learn about AIDS and what their child will be taught during the course of study. Parents may also request that their children be exempted from the AIDS program, Mr. Mackey said, but added that the he hopes all parents will feel free to voice any concern over the program, while still allowing their child to attend.
