RIDE program
offences up
in '87-88
The Ontario Provincial Police’s
Christmas/New Year’s R.I.D.E.
Blitz in Huron County showed an
increase in alcohol related criminal
driving offences even though the
number of vehicles checked was
down from last year.
The O.P.P. detachments of
Goderich, Wingham and Exeter
checked 6,637 vehicles in the last
eight-week period ending January
9, compared to 7,771 last year.
Still, the numberof charges for
criminal driving offences increas
ed to 19 from 12.
The number of 12-hour licence
suspensions, however, was down
to 51 from 56 and the number of
charges under the Liquor Licence
Act dropped to 56 from 89.
In addition to the R.I.D.E.
program, Huron O.P.P. officers
charged another 18 persons with
alcohol-related criminal driving
offences as a result of regular
patrols.
Across Ontario O.P.P. officers
checked 369,403 drivers during the
period and charged 1,683 with
alcohol-related criminal code of
fences compared to 357,167 and
1,812 last year. Fewer 12-hour
suspensions (1,999 compared to
2,938) were issued.
