Despite an all-out effort here by Parr Line forward fails to score and Palmerston Bears went on for a 2-1 win. Mens’ and women’s teams from all over western Ontario took part. Bulls outshoot Wellesley but drop game THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27, 1988. PAGE 17. BY LOIS McARTER The Bulls have had a lull in their hockey schedule this past two weeks, having played their last league game on Jan. 8. They were at hom'e to the Wellesley Apple­ jacks on Sunday afternoon, in a good game of hockey. The first 20 minutes of hockey was scoreless, with good end-to- end rushes by both teams with the visiting goalie making 18 saves while Jeff McGavin had only three shots on net. The teams had played 7:29 of the second period when Bill Haines blasted a shot from the blue line through a maize of players to put Brussels on the scoreboard first with their power play attack. Wellesley returned the attack with 6:05 left on the clock, to tie the game on a power play effort also. With 1:31 remaining in the period, Tim Fritz picked up a rebound to score a short-handed goal and gave Brussels a 2-1 lead at the end of the second period. The teams had played four minutes of the third period when Wellesley scored on a power play to tie the score. Play continued until the ll:39markwhen Wellesley scored to go ahead 3-2. That lead was short-lived as the Bulls came back just 30 seconds iater when Kevin McArter scored on passes from Mike Chapman and Tim Fritz and once more tied the score. There was 3:14 left on the clock when the puck was deflected past goalie McGavin by a teammate to give Wellesley the lead and then they quickly added another in just 17 seconds to cushion their lead. With 1:06 remaining in the game, Wellesley put the game away scoring their third goal in a two minute span of time. The Bulls out-shot the Applejacks 40-19 but still came out on the losing end of the game. Blyth ousted from playoffs Continued from page 16 commanding 6-2 lead. They increased that to a 10-2 lead in the third before Blyth scored their final goal as time ran out. Ryan Chamney took the shot and Michael Bromley slammed home the rebound with one second left in the game. This lopsided game eliminated Blyth from the playoffs although Clifford played gracious hosts by providing the players with hot dogs and choco­ late milk to celebrate Minor Hockey Day. BEAT BRUSSELS In between the two playoff games Blyth had agame scheduled on Friday, January 22 in Brussels. Brussels’ aggressiveness worked to their disadvantage as they picked up eight minor penalties. What was even more amazing was The team will be on the road this week, travelling to Lucan on Wednesday night for an 8:15 start and Friday night in Exeter for an 8:30 start. They will be at home to Seaforth on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Two $50 lottery draws were made this week with no home game last Sunday. The winners were Paul and Tom Robinson both of Wingham. The 50-50 draw for $32 was won by Doug Shaw of Brussels. The annual all-star game be- tweentheNorth and South divi­ sions ofthe Junior “D” league was played in Lucan on Saturday, Jan. 16. The players were each present­ ed with a 10th anniversary all-star hockey jersey with their name on it at the dinner at 5 p.m. before the hockey game at 7 p.m. Blyth, Brussels Peewees tie 1-1 Blyth PeeWees travelled to Brussels Friday night to play an exciting evenly-matched hockey game. Jason Elliott, playing one of his usual strong games held Brussels off on several man disadvantages and a penalty shot. The scoring was started by Blyth at5:33 of thesecond period with Mike McNichol setting up Kevin Souch. Kevin split the Brussels defence and deked the goal tender, putting the puck in the top left hand corner of the net. Blyth tooka 1-0 lead into the final period but Brussels came back to tie the game. Still for Blyth a good effort by the defence and forwards brought results. that the Blyth Atoms capitalized on every penalty as they scored eight power play goals and coasted to a 10-5 victory. Jerrod Button opened the scor­ ing after a Peter Craig rebound and he upped the count to 2-0 on a power play goal as he picked up a loose puck in the Brussels’ goal crease. Blyth increased the lead to 6-3 at the end of two periods to take command of the game. Peter Craig scored a power play goal as he took a shot from the right point. Ryan Chamney scored another man­ advantage goal with help from Christopher Howson and Peter Craig. Brussels scored two goals but Blyth scored their third power play goal of the period as Brian The Brussels Bulls placed seven representatives on the bench this year. They had played half of the first period when Greg Mulvey scored on a shot from Brian McArter. Play continued until 2:44 when Clifford managed to score and tie the game and then again just 39 seconds later to go ahead. Clifford then scored the only goal of the second period to hold a 3-1 lead. Brussels came back and scored in the first minute of the third McNichol assisted Jerrod Button, who recorded the hat trick. Blyth scored their sixth goal of the game as James McNichol jammed home a Michael Bromley shot. Brussels scored before the period ended and added two more in the third but it wasn’t enough as Blyth scored four more power play markers in the third frame. Christopher Howson deflected a Peter Craig shot from the blueline for goal number seven. Jerrod Button scored his fourth goal ofthe game with help from Michael Bromley. Brian McNichol had the honours next as Rvan Chamney assisted. Jonathan Collins scored Blyth’s final goal as he ripped a screen shot past a weary Brussels goalie. Blyth Novices beat Brussels The Blyth Novice Tigers played a 6 p.m. game against Brussels Jan. 20 on home ice. The first period ended with a score of 2-1 for Brussels. Ronnie Abel-Rinn put the firsfgoal on the board for Blyth assisted by Tigers Trent Richmond and Jeff Cowan. Second period Jeff Cowan scor­ ed an unassisted goal bringing the score to a tie of 2-2. Two minutes later Brussels broke the tie scoring (heir third goal, but Tiger Jeff Cowan was hot and scored two more unassisted goals only min­ utes apart. Less than a minute remaining in the second period John Armstrong got a break-away, shot the puck, it hit the goalie. Shane Burkholder caught the rebound and scored Blyth’s fifth goal. Only one goal was netted in the third period and that was by Blyth Tiger Jeff Cowan scoring his fourth goal of the game, this time assisted by Greg Blok. The final score was 6-3 for Blyth Novice Tigers. Brussels curling draw ends The second draw of the Brussels Mixed Curling Club ended on January 18. In first place with 49 points was the team of Bob Alexander, Velma Locking, Andy Ives and Valerie Shortreed. Second place with 45 points went to Ross Veitch, Pauline Patterson, Murray Bone and Nora Stephenson. In third place with 36 points was the team of Orval Bauer, Marg Taylor, Peter Exel and Dorothy Kelly. In fourth place with 33.5 points was the team of Jim Patterson, Fran Bremner, Tom Warwick and Ralph Watson. The Brussels Curling Club will be holding the Lions Men’s Bonspiel on Monday, February 1, the Brussels Stockyards Men’s Bonspiel on Feb. 15, the Huron Feed System and Brussels Agro­ mart Ltd. Farmers Men’s on Feb. 29 and the McGavin Farm Equip­ ment Ltd. and McDonald Homeall Mixed Bonspiel on March 26. Other winners of local interest were Mark Moore, formerly of Wingham, and his partner Tracey Robertson of Orillia, who won the bronze medal after finishing third in the Novice Pairs division; and Curtis Moore. Mark’s brother, and his partner Kim Weekes of Cal­ gary, who finished seventh in the Senior Dance competition. In addition. Mark Moore finished in 11th place in the Senior Men’s individual competition, the class dominated by Brian Orser of Pcnetanguishene. Despite the weeks of gruelling work leading up to the national championships, there is still little respite for the local champions. Peter MacDonald and Kerrie Shepherd have a few days off before going back into training for appearances at a number of upcoming carnivals; while Kevin Wheelerand Michelle Menzies bot h flew directly to New York from Victoria where they will skate a guest performance at a major ice carnival there, before flying back to perform at the opening of the Calgary Olympics late next week. In addition, Peter and Kerrie will be training to pass their Junior Dance test in the next five weeks, having now completed their third and final season as Novices.
