Lucknowis Only Military Funeral
The following item of interest
was given to us by. William
Kennedy of Kincardine concerning
Lucknow's only military funeral on
record.
Mr. Kennedy's letter read;
This is a report of the funeral of
Sgt. John J. Kennedy, November
22nd,, 1923.
"Sgt. J. J. Kennedy laid to rest
with Military Honours.
That, the sacrifices of the Great
War are still being made, and
families are still loSing those dear
to them through broken health due
to war experiences, was brought
home to the people of Lucknow on
Tuesday of this . week when the
remains of Sgt. J. J. Kennedy were
laid to rest with Military Honours
in Kinloss Cemetery. Sgt. Ken-
nedY died at Byron Sanitarium,
London on Sunday, November
18th,, after being in that institution
for about 2 years. While in France
he was wounded and gassed twice
and from the effects of the latter
never wholly recovered. Fora time
after returning to Canada he had
fair health, but two years after, he
contracted a severe cold which
affected his lungs and since that
time he steadily lost strength.
The remains were .brought to
Lucknow and to the Presbyterian
Church where service was conduct-
ed by the Rev. R, MacCallum. It
was the request of Sgt. J. Kennedy
that he should be given a Military
NEuneral and some 25 returned men
were present in uniform and in
charge of $gt. Chas. Gillespie of
Whitechurch. MeMorran Boys
played the Dead March as the
soldiers marched to the cemetery
where the customary three volleys
were Tired over the grave. it was
all very impressive and sadly
reminiscent of the long period.
Besides a mother, brothers and
sisters, 'the deceased leaves a wife
whom he married in' England and a
little daughter three years of age.
Sgt. J. Kennedy was one of four
brothers who served in the War.
He went overseas: with the 33rd
Battalion, was with Machine Gun
battery at the front. His brothers
Alex and Dave Will were with the
-160th. Mrs. Wm. McIntosh of
town is a sister."
Just a note, as far as I know, this
was the only Military Funeral in the
village of Lucknow. There were
two families from the village of
Lucknow that 'had 4 boys in the
War, namely, MacDonald and
Kehnedy.
Alex, Dan, Thomas (Train Time),
John MacDonald.
Alex W., John .I., David G. and
Wm. Kennedy.
Of the 8, as far as I know, only
two are still living, David G.
Kennedy and myself. Wm. Ken-
nedy, Box 12, Kincardine, Ontario.
