Students from the area were required to find their own transportation and many boarded in town especially , during the winter months. Smaller high schools known as continuation schools were operating in. the Surrounding villages of Brussels; Teeswater and Wroxeter. It was' in 1948 that the Department of Education created the high school districts in the Province of Ontario and provided bus transportation for rural stud- ents. At this time the :school changed its name from the Wingham High \ School to the Wingham District High School. The continuation schools in Brus- sels, Teeswater, and Wroxeter were closed and these students were bused to the district school. To accommodate the increased enrolment the school board. purch- ased an "H" hut from the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1954 construction was started on a new high school on the site of the present school. During the Christmas vacation of 1954 the "H" 'hut of the old -school was destroyed by fire which neceSsitat- ed a move of some students to the new unfinished school in Jantiary 1955.
