The following history of F. E.
Madill Secondary School as pres-
ented at the Commencement last
week. r
The first attempt at providing
secondary education in Wingham
took the form of continuation
classes in the public, school
building. However in, 1905, the
contract for a high school building
was .awarded to Messrs. Nicholson
and. Bennett and the building •was
completed' in 1906 at a total cost of
$17,121.31. Known as the Wing-
ham High School it was officially
opened in 1907 and was located on
the corner of John St. and Carling
Terrace on the site now occupied by
CKNX Radio and TeleviSion. For

the 'next 48 years this school'
provided secondary edUcation for
the students in the town and
surrounding area. Students from
the area were required to find their
own transportation and many
boarded in town especially , during
the winter months. Smaller high
schools known as continuation
schools were operating in. the
Surrounding villages of Brussels;
Teeswater and Wroxeter.
It was' in 1948 that the
Department of Education created
the high school districts in the
Province of Ontario and provided
bus transportation for rural stud-
ents. At this time the :school
changed its name from the
Wingham High \ School to the
Wingham District High School.
The continuation schools in Brus-
sels, Teeswater, and Wroxeter
were closed and these students
were bused to the district school.
To accommodate the increased
enrolment the school board. purch-
ased an "H" hut from the Royal
Canadian Air Force.
In 1954 construction was started
on a new high school on the site of
the present school. During the
Christmas vacation of 1954 the
"H" 'hut of the old -school was
destroyed by fire which neceSsitat-
ed a move of some students to the
new unfinished school in Jantiary
1955. The new Wingham District
School was officially, opened' in
April 1955 by the Premier of the
Province of Ontario, the Honour-
able Leslie M. Frost , This school

Plan For 77
November 8th saw the second
meeting of Kinsmen and. Kinettes
working towards the Lucknow
Kinsmen Summerfest for 1977.
This promises to 'be an even
greater and more successful event
than the past summerfest held
June 25th - 26th of.1976.
This year, a wider variety .of
activities are to be planned. -Those
included are a. dance, midway, '
casino night, etc.
The' meeting was held in the
clubhouse and this year's Summer-
fest Committee began what hopes
to be a weekend full .of fun and
enjoyment for the whole family.
was built to accommodate' 520
students. The old high school
which had been sold to CKNX
Radio and Television was' destroy-
ed by fire in 1962. The station
continued its live television pro-
gramming from the stage of what is
now Gym 228 without missing a
single day of broadcasting.
As the school: continued to grow
in enrolment during the so called
"baby boom" of•the post war years
an addition of • 'seven classrobins
was, added in 1959 which provided
fora capacity. of 760 students.
In 1962 an agreement, was
reached between the Wingham;
Lucknow and Ripley District High
School Boards te) provide vocational
training at the Whigham District
High School. As a result in October
11962, a second addition• consisting
of eight classrooms, five 'shops, an
enlarged cafeteria, and a second
gymnasium was. started. This
addition was officially opened on
April 23rd,, 1964:by the Minister Of
Education, The Honourable Wil-
liam G. Davis.
' On J anuary lst, 1967 the
I Wingham District School and the
Lucknow District High School
Boards were dissolved and a new
board, the Huron-Bruce District
High School Board assumed the
administration of the areas under
the two former boards. A third
addition to "the schdol . which
expanded the vocational business
and vocational technieal facilities
was completed in 1968. This
increased the rated student capac-
ity to 1510 which included the
students from the former Lucknow
District High School. In September
1968 the name of the' school was
changed to the F. E. Madill
Secondary School in recognition of'
Mr'. Madill's long service and his
great contribution to education in
the area. •
On January 1st, 1969 all schools
in Huron County 'came under the
jurisdiction of the Huron County
Board of Education.
In September 1976, the F. E.
Madill Secondary SChoot celebrat-.
ed. its 70th anniversary in the field
of secondary education.
