Austin Agriculture Minister • Eugene Whelan is making announcements, which, he says, will, prevent our beef market from becoming, an international dumping- ground. There is no guarantee that- the recent announcements will provide relief for beef producers. Dressed beef imports are already „up 58 percent from last year. Canada is still committed to import 17.5 million pounds of beet under agreements made before, there- strictions, were announced.. Roy Atkinson, president of the National Farmers Union, noted that if there is now a large quantity of ;beef in storage, it will continue to keep prices • down. As any cow calf operator knows, beef prices have been down precisely because Canada is already swamped with cheap imported beef. The free market system for pricing and marketing cattle does not work. Beef trade is subject to not only domestic and foreign government policy, but also the marketing practices of the national and international business corn- N.F.U.
