N.F.U. News
By G. Austin
It is not the fault of the dairy
farmer that the' supply manage-
ment program 'that he works under
went wrong. The' quota system was
mismanaged by both . the Federal
and Provincial governments, but
the farmer is paying 'the price. He
will 'continue to do so unless Le is
willing to do something about `11. -
The ballot box is not the answer for
farmers since we repreSent only
5% of the vote. No politician will
risk political defeat for the well
being of the farmers.
• Provincial- agencies and Federal
agencies continued 'buck passing::
Each provincial government makes
policy and expects the federal
government to carry it out, each
province expecting the lion's Share '
of the pie. Farmers are confused -
are the provinces more interested
in their own little empires than they '
are of the farmers needs?
To correct the dairy problem and
the problem in marketing ' all
farmers produce, the N.F.U. had
adopted six policies recommending
national authorities . - dairy; live-
stock; grain and oil seeds; egg and
poultry; fruit and vegetables; and
fine seeds. All must be national 'in
scope, giving the National Agency
the, power' to regulate the product,
from the primary producers '
through to , the consumer. The
• agency would be given'the power to
--make policy-and-- regulate -exports— ]
and 'imports.'
