The rain was swirling,down so thick that visibility was reduced where itwas all gray outside.' In the brief period a number of tree limbs came down and various lawn items were blown around. The falling rain was so thick that it was impossible to even see things in Gore Park across the way. Congratulations go to . Miss Shelley Stilwell of. Barrie : on winning a 10 -speed bicycle in raising the most points in . a recent Roller-Skate-A-Thon. Shelley, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Stilwell; raised $194 dollars. The total amount raised by the sponsor- ing Barrie Minor Lacrosse Associa- tion. was $1300 and will be used in constructing a newlacrosse playing field ..in that city. Shelley is presently 'visiting with her grand- mother Mrs. Gladys Huston in Ripley. Her mother is the former Donna Huston and Mr. 'and Mrs. Stilwell and Shelley at ' one time lived in the house where Mrs. Katherine Calling 'now lives, just south of the home of .Mr. and Mrs: Lloyd Wylds - the late Dr._ Kelleher place. . The- picture of Shelley .receiving her.brand new bike was in, a recent edition of the Barrie Examiner newspaper. # ** * *•.*• Last Tuesday' it was announced on the CKNX Wingham farm news at noon that Miss Dianne MacKay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald MacKay, was the winner of the Bruce County Women's Institutes Scholarship. Dianne, who is a' graduate of the Ripley Schools, will attend the University . of Guelph this fall. * * *. * * r , In his 79th year, George Culbert Sr. of , Mildmay passed away. on. Tuesday of last week in Walkerton Hospital. The fune al service was held in; St; Paul's. Last Saturday .the , first combining was noted at two farms in the Ripley area. One block south of Ripley at the south .east corner of the fifteenth andthe sixth the first combine in action this year was harvesting wheat on the farm of Oliver Smith. Later is was noticed. that Keith Carter had made a start onhis wheat field on the former Teskey farm at the corner of the 10th concession and the 20th sideroad, right in the area known once as Lisburn:.' * * * *..* * Last Sunday Francis Gemmell' and . his. sister Mrs. Marion McTavish of Ripley motored . o Oakville to attend the •funefal service of their uncle George Davis. The . late Mr. Davis was . the husband of the former Amanda Morgan r a.sister of their mother. On Friday morning, July .t 30th starting at' ten in the morning and going through to six on Saturday 'evening, it'is'the Huron Bruce Arts and Crafts Show. This is the first time this show will be in the Complex which should provide good space for exhibits, displays and parking. On Sunday afternoon from 4 to 8 p.m. it is the annual Ripley and District Lions Beef Barbecue. In addition; there will be musical entertainment and also a ball game in the park. Mrs. Marion McCharles, the convener of the Huron Bruce Craft and Arts committee, in charge of the show here this Friday and Saturday, is. also the convenor. of the Crafts committee at the . International Plowing Match at Walkerton. Fpr the Ripley show the committee has arranged for some hand crafted articles and craftsmen not at previous shows such as,handmade furniture, copper kettles, and stained glass along with the regular ones. ' There will be door' prizes every hour on the hour. The arena committee will be serving refresh- ments and food. Some, person will be the lucky winner, of a crocheted table cloth by Mrs. Alex Purvis. * * *-:* * *• Ripley area folks are glad to learn that Norman MacDonald, who has been.hospitalized for some weeks in London, is back to his home in Ripley.' * * * * * * Attending the July meeting of the Ripley Agricultural Society on Monday evening, July 12th, last week were President .Morley Scott, vice 'presidents Jack Farrell and • Dan A. : MacDonald, Dorothy and Russ Brooks, Duncan D. McLeod, Reg Moore, John Gamble, Gordon Patterson, Wes Smith, Bob Rut-, ledge, Mrs. Sheila MacDonald, Mrs. Barbara 'Gamble,. Fran and Ab Wylds. The main discussion was putting together the 1976 "prize list for " the show, on . the last Saturday in September. The directors have spent both time and money to improve the grounds and Knox shed. So it was rather a discouragement to them when John Gamble reported that electricalinstallations newly placed in .the shed the week before were already broken by persons un- known. Bob Emerson, chairman . of the Ripley Huron Recreation Complex committee, which was also meeting. that same evening, attended part of this meeting and addressed. the directors. The Ripley Huron Fall Fair will again be held on the last Saturday' in 'September. " This is September 25th just ahead of the big Plowing Match. Visiting for a few days with Mrs. Mary Robertson and Mass Chris Robertson, her grandmother and aunt, was Miss Marilyn Ford of Coburg. * * * * *'* Mr. and Mrs. K. Scott MacKen- zie of Kitchener, and Mr. R. M. Scott and Mr. Gibson Hainingo f Michigan , visited recently with Mrs. Violet MacKenzie in :Ripley. They also visited with. Mr. John F. MacLennan, Ashfield. * * *.* * * Mrs. Elizabeth MacDonald and Mrs. Violet MacKenzie attended the "Graduation Patty" of Miss Dianne MacKenzie at the home of her parents, Mr. and. Mrs. Jack MacKenzie of Ashfield, on Sunday afternoon.
