FARM- REPORT
CAN WE FEED ,FOR FERTILITY?
-from "Fertility &„ Sterility" -
Hoard's DaIryinan.
.".The nutrients required ,'for
reproduction are those required for
many other body procesies, •To the
best or our knowledge, 'there is no
single nutrient required for repro-
duction that is not also required for
growth, or ,.for milk secretion.
...One of the most common
for9is of. nutritional infertility
results from an insufficient supply
of ' energy, , that is, from partial
starvation. Many experiments
have shown that underfeeding
heifers seriously delays sexual
maturity. Once the slightly
underfed heifer reachei puberty,,
her fertility is apparently normal.
NumerouS reports have shown
that ptunted heifers or those in poor
condition, are likely to have
infantile ovaries, irregular heat
periods, and deciclely lower fertil.;
ity. -In severe starvation, the estrus
cycle ceases.
"Hollow belly" occurs most
• frequently in heifers, and is often
associated with internal and exter-
nal parasites. Many dairymen
simply pasture yearling heifers all
summer. . There is a strong
tendancy to forget those heifers
until it comes time to breed them.
Then the herdsman may find that
the heifers look thin and do not
come into standing heat.
The vast majority of these
difficulties can be prevented or
cured with an adequate grain ration
combined with an effeetivelparasite-
,control program.
....Studies have/ shown that
heifers fed adequate roughage with
a minimum of grain (2 pounds per
day) will reach breeding size 'by 12
months of age. Holstein heifers
gaining a minimum of 115 pounds
daily from birth to calving can calve
at 24 months of age weighing 1,100
pounds or more after calving.

For most practical circumstanc-
es, we recommend feeding cattle
for optintinn growth and milk
production. •
The protein and energy require-
ments for reproduction (even-for
pregnancy) are small compared to
the requirements for growth or 'for
milk secretion.
However, the requirements
vitamins and Tinier* during late
pregnancy are quite critical.
Unfortunately; the dry period is
one time when some dairymen
'skimp on feeding.
A dry period-of at least 55 days is
essential so' thatthe cowcan build ,
up a reserve of nutrient o supply
the. tremendous nutriti e demands
during the, next lactat n,
From' the standpo t of the
developing calf, adequa vitamins
and minerals are important.
Lastly, remember those heifers out
on pasture. They need some grain
ration, tool Well-grown heifers
need not be bred to a beef
ZANY ZUCCHINI
ZUcchini is a summer squash
which grows quickly on small
runnerless bushes. They are
harvested when immature, ,before
the rinds and seeds begin to
harden. At their best when 6 - 8
inches in length, firm and heavY for
their size, 'these summer squashes
are more fragile than their, tougher
winter cousins and so require
careful handling, refrigeration and
Should be used soon after purchas-
ing.

prolific, many gardeners find
themselves with large quantities of
this vegetable and need ideas for
using it. A list, 'of suggestions and
recipe's for using zucchini has been
prepared and is available by ,
