With community arenas all
across Ontario being closed by the
provincial government because
standards of construction fall below
that of the Ontario Building' Code,
it was pleasant news for the people
of this community, and the village
council; to learn that the Lucknow
arena,. given a few minor repairs,
presents no construction problems
and, according to the inspecting
engineer "should give many more
years of service providing normal
maintenance is carried out".
The inspection of the building
was made by Ernest Gosling and
Associates Ltd., the same engin-
eering firm involved when the
building was remodelled and
strengthened several years. ago.
The Gosling report to council
read -as follows:
INTRODUCTION'
This is to place on record notes
made during the writer's inspec-
tion of this , building.
The inspection was carried- out
on the 7th June 1976 at the request
of the Village of Lucknow, in order
to determine the safety and
adequacy of the roof structure to
support wind' and snow ioads
occurring in this area.
This firm was retained to' carry
out this inspection as a result of
previous work on this building. In
1968 and 1969; Ernest Gosling =.8t
Associates' Ltd. prepared drawings
etc. for a complete repair and
renovation to the roof structure to
this building.
The building structure is corn- .
prised of reinforced concrete- foun-
dations and slab on grade, with the
superstructure, 'being a series of
two pinned trussed arch frathes
spanning about 90'-0". The roof
structure is of timber construction.
Enclosed here is a' sketch S1,
showing a diagrammatic plan and
cross' section through the building.

UPPER ROOF STRUCTURE
A careful examination was made
with the aid of a ladder truck. It
was noted that two diagonal
timbers 'on the ease face of the
southern half of 'frame #4 were
cracked and chipped. The 'damage
appeared to have occurred when
the repairs were carried out in 1969
and are• the . result' of poor
construction procedures rather
than damage resulting from load-
ing.
The damage should, be repaired
by removing . the 'cracked timbers
and replacing with new timber of
the same size. The existing
