The Commission to Review Proposals
Property Tax Reform in Ontario
&public meeting for residents of Brute, Grey 'and., Dufferin counties and Owen
'Sound will,be held on. August 5, 1976 at 2 p.m. to 4":30 p.m, 7 p.m. to 9;30 p.m:
and on August 6, 1976• at 10 a.m. 'to 12:30,4M. at West Hill Secondr'y School
Gymnatorium, 750 — 9th Street West, Owen Sound, to -receive submissions, both
oral and written, from local government representatives, property taxpayers and
all other interested .parties, concerning the proposals that have been put forWard
by the Government of Ontario-as a means of establishing a new system of property
taxation based on market value assessment. •
This meeting is one of a series which the Commission is conducting throughout
Ontario this summer and fall, before submitting its recommendations to the govern- .
merit.
.The proposals, originally pOblished in the 1976 Ontario Budget, Budget Paper E,
entitled Reform of Property Taxation in Ontario, are as follows:'
1. Residences in Ontario, collectively,
will bear a reduced share of property
taxes.
,2. Residential property will be redefined
..),to include only residenceS and ,a
reasonable amount of land.
3. The' present practice of levying dif, •
ferent rates_ oh..residentiat and
commercial properties will be discon-
tinued. .
,4. Farmland, farm buildingS, managed •
forests and farm residenceS will ,be • 10. Assessment. On• provincial government
assessed .at market value. Farmland,

will be taxed at 100 percent of market,
value and the taxes'will be paid by the
Province. Farm residences Will be
taxed as all other residences at"50 per-,

provision to recover taxes paid by the
Province if the property changes use:

subject to, business assessment at 50'
percent of market value. .
7. • As is' the present case, churcheS, 15. Ontario's property tax credits which
relate property ,taxes to the ability to

upon implementation of the new
system.

Since the purpose of these meetings is to help ensure that the new taxation.system .is
implemented in an efficient and equitable manner, the Commission hopes that
allOntat'io residents-with opinions and suggestions to offer will manage to make their
representations to us.

allowed to include their property tax
payments as allowable expensesp for

Sympathy is' extended to the
family of Mrs. Annie Bere in their
bereavement. Her funeral was
from Stiles Funeral Home on
Saturday, 'with interment in Dun=
gannon . cemetery.
The subject of Rev. H. G.
Dobson's sermon on Sunday was
"In God We Trust". There will be
o Sunday School • sessions during
J ly and August but the children
are •invited to come to. the regular
service of worship. There will be a
part for them.
MUSIC RESULTS
Congratulations to Irene Logten-
berg who passed tier Grade 7 music
exam. Correction from last week,.•
Shelley Rivett passed her Grade 9
music, not Grade 6. Congratula-
tions. Both •girls are pupils of Mrs.
Donal&on in Goderich.
BADLY BITTEN BY DOG
Kenny Egglestone was bitten
about the face and head last week
by a St. Bernard dog while visiting
in the country. His wounds
required about 50 stitches and he
spent 3 or 4 days in $6434al.
Nels Pearson is wearing a' steel
point over a finger which he injured
playing ball:
Mrs. Congram is ietting•her arm
x-rayed on Monday to see if she cah
get the cast off.
Miss Irene Hasty took' the train
On Monday to return to Regina as
no planes were flying last weekend.
LaVerne Pentland flew to Cali-
fornia last- week and is motoring
back with his son Bob.
Mrs. Biloy (nee Pam Pentland)
and family spent a few days at their
summer home. The children
stayed on with their grandmother,
Mrs. LaVerne Pentland, last week..
Mfs. Margaret Pritchard of
Toronto:visited with Mrs. LaVerne
Pentland and Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred
Pentland on the weekend.
Ruth Bere, Windsor, and her
fiance, Jim Austin, Orillia, visited a
couple of days with Mrs. Mary
Bere during the week.- Jamie Bere
returned to Windsor with Ruth on
Sunday for some holidays.

The annual Brookside School
staff party was held at Bentniller
Forester's Hall on Tuesday evening
with a barbecue steak supper,
horseshoe .games, a sing song to
music provided by Don Cameron,
Ted Granger and. Bill Black, and
dancing to complete the evening.
Gifts were presented to Mr. and
Mrs. Ross Errington on the
occasion of their 25th wedding
anniversary; to Ted pranger who is
moving to Haliburton 'area and to
Miss Frances Lemon who' is also
leaving the Brookside staff.

Opening night of the Blyth Summer
Festival and enjoyed the musical
comedy "The Blood is Strong" on
Saturday night.
