Tommy just turned nine last week. The competition was held at the Thornhill Community Centre on • Saturday and Sunday and attracted entries from all across Canada. ' Tommy"also won second place in the boys' open solo class, being defeated' by a 20-year-Old resident of the, Kitchener area. This is. Tom's second year in Bowling Skills Wins Trip South Mrs. Jim (Margaret) Wilson of Lucknow has won a trip to' the Bahamas as a result of her bowling skill in a recent tournament. Sixty-eight centres in Western Ontario had, representative's at a. London tournament June 12, the Dairy Queen bowler of the week tournament. Margaret represent- ed the Lucky Wood 'Lanes in Lucknow. • By virtue of her 848 triple, she won the trip south, to be taken next January. Recent Graduate Tony McQuail, a resident of West Wawanosh Township in the St. Helens area, recently graduated from the University of Waterloo: with the • degree of Bachelor of Environmental Studies, Honours Map-Environment Studies. Following completion of his grade 13 at Goderich District Collegiate Institute, Tony began four years at university, with the third Year being spent in courses,in Agricultural and Horticulture at Guelph. First Summerfest Is Fine Success The first Kinsmen-Kinette Sum- merfest held last weekend proved to be a success for the sponsors. 'On Friday night, Monti Carlo Night and Bingo were held in the arena. A. beer garden was also operated on 'Friday night, Saturday afternoon and night. A horseshow operated from 12.30 p.m. throughout Saturday • afternoon, featuring both western and English classes. A steak barbecue from 5 to 7 p.m. featured some fine cooking by local Kinsmen and other volunteers who battled a rain storm, but nevertheless • came up with a fine meal for about 300 people. A ,senior citizens card party, was held at the Legion flail on Saturday night. 'The dance in the arena to music • The Harbourlites attracted a, full house on Saturday evening. , The Rothman's special events caravan ' provided an excellent sound system and an outlet for cigarette sales in the arena, the profits •from which stay with the Kinsmen., • The Summerfest,•took weeks of planning and many hours in the setting up, and cleanup operation. • On Sunday evening, the Kins- men will play the CKNX Tryhards in a game of Donkey Baseball. For the last few' weeks he has been `training daily, his parents picking him up after school at St, Joseph's, School,- Xingsbridge and driving him to Wingham for his lessons... Tommy had earlier won bronze medals in drum and majorettes at a Wingham competition, as well as the travel award at Wingham. Patti Roberton's group of 6 girls, doing precision work, won first in the team competition' for Canada at the weekend event. The team is known as the Canadettes. LOCNIBRIEFis Mr. and Mrs.' Allan Johnson of Lucknow, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Ferguson of Wiarton, returned last week from a four week holiday in England, Scotland and Ireland. Pearl Jamieson recently returned to her home in Wiarton after spending 71/2 weeks in •University Hospital 'in London following surgery.: Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Coyne have rented the apartment in the Ashton Block recently • vacated hy Mr. and Mrs. Rob Sauve who are now living at Blythe Mr. and Mrs. Coyne were residing •at Tiverton. Jack and Audrey MacDonald of •Lucknow. returned Monday from • a three week vacation in England, Wales and Scotland. They 'made the trip over by ship, sailing from. New York 'and returning by plane on Monday. Because , of the Canadian air strike, they flew to Detroit, and were busSed to Toronto by ,the airline. Blind Since Birk. Opens Musit Centre At Ripley Barry Pollock of Ripley has opened A music centre in that town., Barry, who is 22, is, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Pollock of Ripley. Blind since birth, he attended the School for' the Blind at Brantford where • he 'completed grade 12. He took his grade 13 at Ripley High School. After working at home fora time, he spent the last year at Heintzman in Hanover following the trade of piano tuning .which he learned at Brantford. Barry has a good ear for music and his friends wish him the• best in his new musical business. Ordained At Recent Service Richard Earl Sand was ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church of Canada at a ' recent service on Sunday, June 20th. Rev. Sand served the chargei of Knox Presbyterian Church in Ripley and Ashfield Presbyterian Church for the past two years while a student. He is a graduate of the University of 'Guelph and of Knox College, Toronto where he, trained for the ministry. He was born at Sault Ste.• Marie but Thornhill has been his home 'for the past twenty years. Rev. Sand will take up duties in September at Flin Flon, Manitoba under the Board of World Mission, The Lucknow and District Horti- cultural Society have once more completed several flower beds and planters around the town. This year the society had Claude Guay, local stone mason, erect new permanent planters at the East and West entrances to the village on highway $6. These planters are made of angel stone and will certainly improve the entrance to the village. The . new medical centre was also beautified with shrubs, geraniums and marigolds. KATHLEEN HOGAN Kathleen Hogan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Howard of R. R. 7. Lucknow, received her Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in English on' Wednesday, June 9 from the University of Western Ontario. Graduation exercises were held in Alumni Hall, University of Western Ontario. Kathleen was named to the Dean's-Honours List, upon graduation. Open Business A new business will open next week in Lucknow in the Johnstone Block. Lucknow Cut and Curl Beauty Salon will be operated by Mrs. Ronald (Delores) Cross of the Holyrood-Kinlough area. Mr. and Mrs., d ciross and two children Lindell,. 10 and -Michelle, 2 reside on the former Perry Hodgins farm. They came :to this area ' from Toronto 3 years ago. Mr. Cross is employed at Mouglas Point. Many boxes of marigolds were planted in front of the factory and with the weather very dry, water- ing had, to be done. The flower bed committee spends many hours planting these beds and were very disappointed to find someone had pulled' •a large number of plants, in front of the factory, and had piled them in the cornet to die.
