similar letter; August 1972 - a letter
requesting confirmation of arena
- Dr, Bette Stephenson, Minister:
of Labour, said today that only
arenas that.have been certified as
'safe by a professionalengineer will
be allowed .to open next fall.
in December 1975 the MiniSter
Addressed 'a letter to the heads of
councils of all local municipalities
asking' them to procure a report
froin a professional engineer on the
arena's safety.'
r '
Dr. , Stephenson coMmended
- those municipal councils who filed
reportS and complied with the
, directions issued by the Industrial
, -
Safety inspectors. She asked• that,
'those who had not complied do so
immediately tck protect the lives of
the children and the adults in the
community.
Forty Percent of the province's
869 arenas are suspected of not
being capable of safely sustaining
local snow and wind loads 'as
.required by the 1970' National
Building Code of Canada.
- Of these 350 "suspect' arenas,
200 have been in4iected in 'the past
six months and 57 ordered closed.
Some of these (57) arenas have
been demolished, replaced or
repaired in the meantime. The
remaining 150 will be inspected
and, appropriate action taken by the
end 'of July. '
In a few cases where 'engineer's
reports state that the building, is
capable of withstanding certain
wind and dead loads, arenas have
been allowed to remain open until
October 15th to accommodate
summer activities. However the
Minister warned,. "We are certain-
ly trying, .to be charitable but it's
difficult to be excessively charit-
able When human safety is'involv-ed,
Municipalities have received five
letters concerning arenas* in the
past five years. October 1970 - a
recommendation to obtain a pro-
fessional engineer's report on
arena safety; November, 1971 - a
information in Ministry's file's;
November 1974 - copies , of previous
three letters together with a
questionnaire to be completed and
returned; December, 1975 - letter
from Dr. Stephenson.
Recreation
Department Notes
LUCknow and District Swimniing
Pool will be ready for public
swimming by the middle of this
week.
Due to the lack of interest, the
Midget team entered in the
W.O.A.A. has been pulled out of
that competition.. As no one has
come forward to manage and coach
minor ball, it is becoming very
difficult to run a ball program.
However, 'all boys from. Lucknow,
age 8' - 12 and 12 - '16, wanting .to
play in the Recreation League with
area teams, should be at" the ball
park at 7.30 p.m. this Thursday,
June' 24. If little or no interest is
shown as to players or coaches, the
minor ball program may have to be-
, drop . A very sorry note!
Meanwhile in Intermediate ball,
Lucknow appears to be ,in a slump,
losing the last three games 'S - 0 to
Mount Forest; 4 . - 0 to Chepstow
and a tight game with *Ripley,.
losing 4 - 3 in .14 innings. Small
errors have lost these games, but
,the players feel it in their bones_
that this problem is just temporary.
=
A spepial note to those who get
their kicks out of using rbe ball
diamond as a drag strip in ihe form
of cars, motorcycles and even
horses, this leaveS ruts , which are
hazardous to ball players and is
costly in hours spent repairing.
There will be more observation put•
on this area and a small surprise for
those caught. '

Many a voter has come to the
conclusion that most political
promises are just as frail as
New Year's resolutions.
