THAT
The Bluewater Shrine Club held
a dinner meeting in the Lucknow
Legion Hall. on Wednesday, May
19th. Arrangements for the
meeting were carried out by
direator Ronald Forster. TMs is the
first meeting for the Shrine. Club in
Lucknow.
THAT
The Central Alberta fastball
league is in full swing and one of
the strong point in the Olds,
Alberta team, is the pitching of
Almer Ackert, 'son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Ackert of Holyrood. Almer
recently threw a four-hitter to stop
the defending champion Arlington .
Inn 3 - 0. Almer played 'with the
team, last year. •
THAT
Lail and Kanta Mehan, propriet-
ors of Mehan's Supermarket in
Lucknow," recently enjoyed a
week's vacation in Las Vegas,
Nevada with 200 other retailers and
wholesalers affiliated with whole-
sale food supplier M. Loeb. Ltd.
They flew on a Charter plane from
Toronto to Las Vegas and the trip,
was all inclusive, meals, accommo-
ation and entertainment. '

What could have been h major
fire was "nipped in the bud" On .
Friday- morning at' Treleaven's
Lucknow Feed Mill, A shaft in the
elevator shifted and caused enough
friction against the wooden eleva-
tor wall to start a small . fire.
Firemen quickly extinguished the
outbreak and no damage resulted.
THAT
Members of the Lucknow School
Band, bandinaster Gordon Cayley
and bus driver Cec Garniss
returned on Sunday afternoon from
a' five day f400 mile band trip that
took the group as far as Quebec
City where they played in the Lions
Club convention parade On ,Satur-
day. The band was well received at
the several concerts they played en
route, and reports are that their
performance was excellent.
THAT '.
Morley Abbott of Lucknow,
showed us an.interesting historical
publication which Was loaned to
him by Gordon. MacDonald, who
resides northiof Kincardine. The
newspaper was "The' Saturday
Ledger", -printed in Toronto in
March, 1893 and contained 'a salute
to the village of Lucknow at that
time. The paper contained pictures
and stories of .the people And
organization of that era in The
Sepoy *Town. 'It has a wealth of
early history in the two pages about
Lucknow: Mrs. Gordon MacDon-
ald acquired it, at an auction sale
near Pine River. The paper was
originally the property of a Thomas
Thompson of Pine River.
THAT
Because of the increased number
of, women din business in recent
years, a decision was recently
made to rename Lucknow Busi-
nessmen's Association to Lucknow
Business Association.
THAT
A fire call to the. Mid Huron
beach area on Sunday night about
9.30 p.m., at the end of the 4th of
Ashfield, proved to be a false
alarm. What was reported as a
bush' 'fire turned out to/ be a
resident doing ,a bit of burning in a '
"cleanup operation". 'A neigh-
bour, believing there was a fire out
of control, turned in the alarm. The
false alarm indicated that .the price,
of gasoline has in no way hampered
the fire 'followers. Upwards of 40
cars followed the fire truck on the
trip, to the lake and back.
THAT
Mrs. Jessie Allin, Lucknow, was
admitted , by ambulance to Wing-
ham and District Hospital - early
Sunday morning, suffering from a
disloCated shoulder in a fall in her
apartment.

many and his, death brought
sadness to a wide circle of friends
and acquaintances.
Gordie was very athletic , minded',
and was ' well known for his
contribution to local hockey and
ball activity, as well as other
sports. He graduated last year
from grade 12 at the. F. E. Madill
Secondary School. •
Besides his mother, the former
Margaret MacPherson of St. Hel-
ens, he is survived by brothers
Dave, a student at Fanshawe
College in London, Fred and Kevin
and sister. Elizabeth, all at home.
He is also survived by grandpar-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon
MacPherson of 'St. Helens.
The funeral 'service is from the .
MacKenzie Memorial Chapel in
Lucknow today, Wednesday, June
2nd with burial in Greenhill
Cemetery, Lucknow, Rev. Douglas
Kaufman of Lucknow United
ChurCh and Rev. A. Cook of St.
Helens United Church will conduct
the service.
