Baha is Observe
Declaration Day
Bahals around the globe obser-.
ve the declaration of the Bab each
year on May 23. On this day in 1844
the Bab deClared himself as. God's
chosen messenger sent to an-
nounce the Coming of promised
one of all ages. Like John the
Baptist, the. Bab foretold the glad
tidings that one greater than
himself • would soon appear
amongst mankind; unlike John the
Baptist, the Bp was an independ-
ent manifestation of God who wrote
his own divinely inspired verses
and initiated laws and principles
suitable for this modern age. ,
, The name "Bab" means "Gate"
:on translation from Persian into
English. The Bab, then, is the gate
to a new era. in an ,evolution
on this planet, an era characterized
by the doors of knowledge being
flimg wide open. The declaration
of the Bab also inaugurated a new
calendar. 'Mankind is now in the
133rd year of the Bahal era,
The 'Bab's declaration , was first
made to a distinguished divine
'called Mulla Hilsayn, who, after
several days of anxions investiga-
.H tion and study': became t firmly
convinced that ,the long-awaited
Mestiah • had ' indeed appeared.
Not, however, until 18 holy souls
had' independently searched him
• out and recognized him as God's
messenger could the Bab declare
his mission publicly, an event
which took' place in Mecca in
December, 1844. The independent
quest for knowledge and truth,
symbolized • by these first 18
disciples orthe Bab, is' one of the'
basic prinicples of the flahaii faith.
It illustrates, moreover, why Ba-
ha'is do not retain a professional.
clergy. •
Tl.e declaration of the Bab
spirked alarm and enmity among
•.h0 orthodox religious authorities
of . Persia.. A: long series of
i n t rogations before tribunals,
deportations. imprisonments,
• scourgings and indignities culmin-
ated in 1859 with his martyrdom by
a firing t'quad: • ,
The physical remains of the Bab
rest today in a beautiful shrine on
Mount Carmel overlooking the Bay
of Haifa, near Haifa, Israel.
