BRUCE COUNTY
FAIRM, REPORT
ALFALFA WEEVIL
Last week alfalfa. weevil was
found and you should check your
Alfalfa field.
For those not familiar with the
insect, it is the worms that do all
•the damage.. When first hatched,
the worm is yellow but turns green
with a white stripe down its back.
When . fully grown, . the worm is
almost one half inch long.
Under cool conditions, the eggs
hAtch and feeding is spread over, .a
long period. But if the weather
turns hot, then all the eggs hatch'
about the same tine and rate of
feeding increases. This could
cause severe damage in a short
period of time. For that reason,
when it turns hot, check your
alfalfa fields every second day.
The best control for insect is
to cut early. But if you can't cut,.
and 25% of . the leaves. at the tip
show feeding, then spray. A
number of insecticides - Sevin,
Malathion, Methoxychlor, Imidan
and Fur da - are registered.
You have to wait 7 days after
spraying before cutting the field,,
with all the chemicals except Sevin.
The most common chemicals
available in this area,. are Sevin and
Malathion. •

Dear Editor and Staff,
• Once again, herewith, my
cheque 'for another year. Your.
paper continues to improve and at
75 I still find enough news of
interest to make it enjoyable
reading. Incidentally, • I was
pleased to read about Mrs, Violet
MacKenzie's birthday celebration
as she and I were born on the ame
day in Ashfield and,' on I one
occasion, celebrated our birthdays
together at our •home.
Geraldine and I continue to lead
a fairly active life. I enjoy my
garden, engage in fund-raising for
cancer and heart research and
Salvation Army work;, look after my
bluebird colony, which produced •
about 425 eggs during the past two
seasons and do some travelling. .
Since last writing you we have
spent several weeks with our
daughter Lynda and two grand-
children in Whitehorse, Yukon,
and we spend a 'few weeks each
summer, with son Donald and three
grandchildren in Virginia. He has
established an orthopaedic clinic
' with a staff of six at Manassas and
is much, too busy, so we usually
visit when he needs a hand with his
faVourite relaxation - gardening.
May your weekly paper continue
to bring pleasure to ex-Lucknow-
