BRUCE COUNTY FAIRM, REPORT ALFALFA WEEVIL Last week alfalfa. weevil was found and you should check your Alfalfa field. For those not familiar with the insect, it is the worms that do all •the damage.. When first hatched, the worm is yellow but turns green with a white stripe down its back. When . fully grown, . the worm is almost one half inch long. Under cool conditions, the eggs hAtch and feeding is spread over, .a long period. But if the weather turns hot, then all the eggs hatch' about the same tine and rate of feeding increases. This could cause severe damage in a short period of time. For that reason, when it turns hot, check your alfalfa fields every second day. The best control for insect is to cut early. But if you can't cut,. and 25% of . the leaves. at the tip show feeding, then spray. A number of insecticides - Sevin, Malathion, Methoxychlor, Imidan and Fur da - are registered. You have to wait 7 days after spraying before cutting the field,, with all the chemicals except Sevin. The most common chemicals available in this area,. are Sevin and Malathion. • If you have any queStions, then please call this, office.
