The May meeting of St. Helens
Women's Institute was held in the
hall at St. Helens. The meeting
opened with the Ode and the Mary
Stewart Collect. ,
The president, Mrs. Peter Chan-
dler, was in charge of the , meeting.
The roll eall "A vanished landmark,
in our community" was answered
by 21 'Members: The minutes of
the April meeting and the corres-:•
pondence was read by the secret-
ary, Mrs. James Aitchison. 4-H
Achievement Day is to be held at
Brookside School on June 12th. St.
Helens W.I, members collected
$348.60 for the Cancer Society.
Delegates were . picked for the
district 'annual iir Auburn on May,
26th. Mrs. James Curran was the
delegate to Officer's Conference in
z.• Waterloo and -gave her report.

Lucknow Brownies held' their
regular meeting. Mrs. Norma
Raynard came to play the piano for
the Brownies so 'they could learn
the words for the World Hunger
Grace.
Sharon Struthers •was Fairy
Queen for Brownie Ring. The
Sixers collected Brownie Gold and
Tawny Owl did inspection for a
Brownie Smile, followed by the
Brownie Prayer. .
At Pow Wow Donalda Thompson
showed three interesting things of
nature. Tawny Owl told the, Golden
Ladder: Brownies that they could
attend the Guide Meeting on
Thursday. night. Mrs. Margaret
Hamilton came to tell the . Pack '
about Cookie D'ay' on Friday, May
7th. The Brownies received letters
to take home telling about the
Mother and. Daughter banquet on
Thursday, May 20th.
During work ',,period Packie
conducted skipping games. Heath-
er MacIntyre and Donalda Thom -
son passed their test for cleaning a•
pair of shoes. ,
'The"meeting was brought to a
close with the Squeeze, Taps and
the Brownie Arch.
Mrs. Glen Campbell at the Sunset
Restaurant at Kincardine on Satur-
day evening, and on Friday
evening joined, with relatives and
friends for the 25th wedding
anniversary in honour of Mr. ,and
Mrs: Allan Coiling at the Ripley
Complex.- '
• Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Haldenby
returned home on Friday night -vith
their daughter arid "son-in-law Mr.
and Mrs. Howard Bennett. While
in Toronto Art underwent major
surgery. His many 'friends wish
him improved health.
Mrs. Wallace Hewitt and Walter
Clark of Waterford visited with Mr.
and , Mrs. George Graham and
other relatives here. •
Mr. and Mrs. George Graham
were in Londori on Monday for his
medical appointment.
Donald Barr of Waterloo spent
the weekend with his mother, Mrs,
JOhn Barr. •

bridal shower for 'Miss Margie

the Purple Grove Community

Harry Parrott, Colleges - and
Universities Minister, said . this,
week he will make an announce-
ment within two weeks about
"differentials" in university tuition
fees for foreign students.
Foreign students on ' student
visas comprise five per cent of
Ontario university Undergraduates'
and fifteen per cent of graduate
students.
. It appears that Ontario has
decided to charge foreign students
a foreign student fee surcharge,
and only the amount remains to be
.decided. •
A number of angry dairy farmers
turned up at the Legislature this
week to protest the recent milk
quota rednctions Of fifteen per cent
by the Federal Government.
The Provincial Government also
has an involvement through the
Ontario Milk Marketing Board, and
also through the provincial pro-
gram called IMPIP, -which was a
program the Province announced in
July. of 1973 designed, to encourage
industrial milk production in the
Province. \

Now there is a'surplus of milk,
and many dairy producers feel that,
since they were encouraged to
increase production by the. Prov-
ince,' the. Province now has a
'responsibility to assist them

MrS. Ernest Snowden took the
chair for the program. They sang
"She'll be coming round the
mountain"-, Mrs. James Curran
and Mrs.. Ross Gammie 'favoured
with a duet. Mrs. Hilliard
Jefferson gave 2 readings "Behind
the Store" and "The Older
• Woman". , •
The topic and motto were in
charge of the curators, Miss
• Beatrice McQuillin and Mrs. Gord-
on MacPherson. A paper on "The
Gravel Road" (between Lucknow
and Goderich), - a poem on St.
Helens' Ancestors); and a history of
the towns of Goderich and Wind-
, ham were prepared by . Miss
Beatrice McQuillin and read by
Mrs: Harold Cooper. , •
Mrs. Gordon MacPherson gave a
reading •on the uses and remedies
of "Good Old Vinegar" over the
years. Mrs. Harold Gaunt gave a
reading on "How to Cook a. Fowl".
"!Liss Beatrice McQuillin conducted
contest. She also showed aerial
naps of St. Helens.. Mrs. Gordon
•vlacPherson asked each, member to
do research on past landmarks and '
articles for the TWeedsmuir Book.

through this difficult adjustment
period. •
In conversations I have had over
the past number of weeks, and
pitticularly the last few days, with
the Minister and. Deputy Minister
of Agriculture, I am told that the
Ministry is, studying several alter-
natives to try and assist producers
to cope with their reduced income
due to the cutback.
The existing distribution system
for Wintario lottery tickers will be
scrapped when the, Olympic Lottery
operation in Ontario is wound up,
according to ,Culture" and Recre,a-
tion Minister 'Robert Welch. '
He indicated it will probably be
replaced with a system that
requires fewer distributors, gener-
ailing handling more tickets, once
incomes have to be derived from a
single lottery. The official agree-
ment under which 014npic Lottery
tickers are sold in Ontario expires
at the end of August.
