Letter To Editor
Lucknow Sentinel.
Dear. Don,
MORE OF THE SAME
I noticed in a front page news
item of The Sentinel *here the
Madill Secondary School in, Wing-
ham has been granted permission
to teach, Anthropology as a
substitute for' the study of Ancient History.
I certainly fail to.see the Wisdom
in switching to Anthropology at a
time when there is a great•need for
both 'citizens and senior students to
take an cnthtisiastic interest in the
tremendous contributions the
Western World has made in the
fields Of transportation and com-
munications during the 19th and
20th centuries. A general know-
ledge. of Ancient Higtory is an
important step towards acquiring
an understanding, of world history.
An understanding of world history
puts a person in a good position to
follow the general trend of World
events that led to the beginning of
these great 'contributions by the
Western World in the fields of
transportation and communica-
tions.
• It was'in the year 1766 that the
Western World discovered hydro-
gen. This lighter than air gas made
possible the 'developrrient , of the
bafloon. The first airship was
developed in the 1780s and by 1836
the first large scale balloon was
capable of flying a distance of
almost 500 miles.
Just . a few years after the
discovery of ' hydrogen saw the
introduction of the modern steam
engine. The' steam engine made
possible the beginning of the
Industrial Revolution, in the 1780s,
the introduction of the first
successful steamboat in 1807 and
the opening of the first railway line
in England in , 1825. When the
railroad was introduced a few years,
later into France and the United
States the assault of the 'Western
World on 'the problems 'of trans-
portation and communications was
in full swing.,. In fact the short
period, from 1876-1889 saw the
introduction of the telephone,
Edison's electric/ light, the motor-
cycle, long distance telephOne, the,
automobile and 'the motion, picture
.machine. By the time the 20th
century' was just twenty years old it
could claim the introduction of the
airplane, the farm tractor and the
first commercial radio broadCast.
Aided by the, pressure and tension
of two world wars the .Westqrn
. World has. now reached the stage
where it is capable of sending men
to the moon and back in compara-
tive safety.
There are two questions I would
like to finish up with'and these are:
1. What possible harm can be done
by our 'Citizens and students taking
an enthusiastic interest in' the
marvaus contributions that the
Western World has nbeen able to.
Make in the fields of transportation
and communications?
2. Considering that there are
countlesS millions of, people living
in the non-western part of the,
world,, should 'we not be giving
serious consideration as to 'how
these marvelous Contributions can
best be used to help create a one
world society?
