A mem,ber of St.- Helens United •Chlireh, he served on the West Wawanosh School Board for a number of years, sold Mutual Life Insurance for several years and was treasurer of West Wawa- nosh 'Township for a few years. After -he retired from active • farming,- he sold ;seed corn for Funk Bros: Seed Corn Cempany for about • five years. ' On September 3, 1914, he mar- ried the former Edna . Jane. Taylor in Kinburn. She , prede- ceased Om, as did a brother,' George, and two sisters, Mrs. William (Myrtle) MacCrostie and Mrs. Ed (Pearl) Smith. Surviving are one son, George of Whitechurch; two daughters, I. •1.; EP THAT A Bowling Tournament , for presidents, secretaries and treas- urer's of the district took place recently at the Lucky Wood Lanes Bowling Alley, Lucknow.. Top bowler in the secretaries class was Elizabeth Hunt of Fordwich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Webster, Lucknow. Don Kellum of Listowel was top bowler in the class for presidents. THAT Mrs. Steve (Marjorie) Hackett is employed by Ontario Housing ' Corporation in their new office at the rear of the McDonagh Insur- ance Building. THAT An article received -in the mail concerning the recent meeting in Wingham about capital punish- ment and gun control was unsign- ed. THAT • Mr. and Mrs. Alex Purves, both veterans of. World War II, have 150 Golden Tulips in bloom at their home at St. Helens. TheSe tulips were purchased through Ripley 440 Branch of the Legion and are ,part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Legion in Canada. The Purves' have a lot of: other bulbs in bloom in various colours including some lovely yellow and red "President Ken- nedy", as a salute to the Bi-Centennial of their American neighbours. THAT. This letter issent to let you know that the Wingham and District Association for the Mentally Re- tarded, as a member of The Canadian- Association for the mentally. Retarded, will be • joining in a nationwide membership re- cruitment effort in May. The week of May 9 to 15 has been designed as National Week for the Mentally Retarded. , During this week, in our efforts to attract new members, we will spotlight the needs of the mentally retarded,• and the services we are providing and seeking to provide in the. Wingham district. Flowers of Hope marigold seeds, which have been packaged by youngsters • in our schools and workshops, will be sent to every householder in the district. In order that those-who receive these Flowers of Hope packages do not overlook their- importance_as a means of appeal, we feel it necessary to substantiate the FlOwers of Hope letters with advertising in newspapers, _ on radio and on television. Anything you can do_to interpret .our story of the needs of the mentally retarded in our district will be of inestimable value to us. Construction has started in Wing- ham of a new building to accomodate mentally retarded pre- school children. The Golden Circle School has been located in the VVingham Public School for the past few years and the Adult workshop is progressing very well with a very capable teacher. We are in desperate need ' of new members in our Association to help with these projects'. We, have done a 'great deal for the" mentally retarded in this area, but there is so much more that needs-to be done.. . We would like .to express sincere appreciatiop on . behalf of the Wingham and District Association for the Mentally Retarded for your continuing co-operation and assist- ance in bringing our message to the public.
