DR.. GP
The tribute paid to Dr: ° William
Vieter Johnston in the notification
of his passing away in Lucknow on
March 20, 1970, was well deserved
(Canada's "Mr. GP" Author 'of
BeSt-Seller-March 22). Dr Ian-
ston was a long-time friend, and the
family physician for all, the years I
lived in Lucknow where I washorn.
His accomplishments were many .
and substantial. He was an
excellent physician.. His talents
were multiple and varied. He
contributed several articles to
medical journals He was an
author of some notend when I last
talked with him in LucknOw on
March 13, 1976, he told me that he
Was involved in writing another
boOk priMarily related to the early
history of the physicians who
Practiced in' Lucknow.
What made this man's life
outstanding was not only' the
recognition of his dedicated care of
his patients, but his ability to take
time from :a busy general practice
and involve himself hi the affairs of
the Ontario Medical Association
with such enthusiasm that recog-.
nition of his contribution was
rewarded by his election to the
highest office as the president.
This appointment would have to be
Considered a singular iMportance
when you realize MS relative
isolation in- a small community and
away from the larger and busy
centres of Medical practice and
administration.
Dr-, Johnston was completely
committed - to imprinting the lot of
the general practitioner in all its
phases and so much so that: again
recognition of his'efforts came with
his appointment 'as .the first
Executiite Director of the College of
Family Physicians of Canada. To
this' post he gave. much of his time
and ability, travelling. across :Can-
ada to speak to medical societies,
always exhorting members of the
newly formed college to expand
their horizons by improving and
updating their' medical :education
and expertise, as well as :encourag-
ing physicians to apply for mem-
bership. SUbsequently, a. medal
was struck in his honor and given
as an award to some outstanding
member, for recognition of signific-
ant- merit. .
Dr. Johnston will long be
remembered for his great contribu-
tion to the cause .of medicine and'
medical education. Medicine is
greater for his life and example of
what a fantily physician should be.
In the article extolling, the many
accomplishments of Dr. Johnston,
a singular' disfavor has been done
to the village of Lucknow and the
home of Dr. Johnston •by describing
Lucknow as an unexceptional rural
community. One would wonder
how you attain the rating, of
exceptionai. Must a native son or
datighter be the recipient of the
Nobel Prize? Should the commun-
ity have produced a winner of the
Victoria- Cross?: , Would the
discovery of oil, some precious
metal or the reporting of a UFO
I landing ,in the community elevate
Lucknow to the status of exception-
al?
As a previous resident of
Lucknow one can recall the names
of Many men and women who have
achieved fame pin many fields of
endeavour and contributed signific-.
1 antly to the life of this conntry. I
am certain the same can be Said for
many communities smaller and
larger than Lucknow. Surely it is
the collective centribution of people
in many Smaller centres of this
country which ha's given Much to
