Not Possible For County To Inspect School Board Books Reeve George Joynt 'of Lucknow recently expressed his disapproval to a suggestion by Bruce County Council that muncipalities in Bruce withpld their school tax payments as an expression of protest over the increases in the requisition sought .by the county school board. Mr. Joyht indicated that this would only furtheivenalize the local faXPiYer by adding 'interest charges. ' Highway 86 farm,, east of White- church. Missionary In Lebanon Is Safe In Cyprus Friends in this community of Miss Edith Patterson, a missionary who has been serving in Ainzhalta, Lebanon, were pleased to hear from her on April 22nd Tor the first time since September 1st of last year. MIA Patterson, in mid April, was 'in Limassol,. Cypress at a conference, unsure of whether or not it would be safe to return to strife-torn Lebanon. Several, members of their "mis- sion and their families left Lebanon earlier when fighting spread to the hills nearby 'where they were Ideated. Miss Patterson was one of the last to leave. • Miss' Patterson attended High School fn Ripley, being 4 native of this area. She attended teachers', college in Stratford. At the time of Ripley Reunion, Miss. Patterson was home on a year's "leave and took part in the Reunion church service,. At that time, a class reunion was held. at the hoMe of Mrs. Florence MacKenZie of Lochalsh. A- letter from the. Knox Presby- terian Church 'on Spadina Avenue in Toronto, telling of Miss Patter- son's safety and experiences, was received by local friends Mrs. ' Frank Ritchie of Ashfield and Mrs. Virden' Mowbray of Lucknow, LARGE DOSES A marriage license is really a, prescription many men take life according to directions. e Levels A culmination of eight years of work by Al and Gladys Hamilton and family had' a 'very unfortunate conclusion on Friday- of last week, just after noon. , Their summer cottage, which was planned as a future, permanent home, was burned 'to the ground in a fire, of undetermined origin. From early May until late Fall, the Hamilton family forsake their apartment in Lucknow at "the lake". Their property was at the "foot of the 12th" of Ashfield, just at the bottom of the hill, below At a regular Board meeting held in Chesley on April .6, the Bruce' County Board 'of Education approv- ed a budget that reflected a 13.7% increase over 1975 including 12% 'for increased costs and 1.7f70 for 'increased enrolment. 'The budget of $18,477,591. contained an in- crease of $2,222,000. over the previous year. Following the meeting a press release was issued to the news media explaining the increased cost items and' also the effect that this would have on education levies for the .municipalities in Bruce County. The Board felt that coverage of this release was excellent and that everyone. Bruce County would be aware of the large 'percentage increases for educational purposes that would appear on the 1976 tax notices. The fallacy in this' line of thought became very 'apparent during the April meeting of Bruce' County Council.. At this meeting , many members of County Council made • scathing' comments • about. the , the Girl Guide Camp. Much of the •lumber and beams in the building was taken from a barn at. the top of the hill, formerly the property of Gladys' 'father Sam Gibson, and built into the, summer property. Bruce County' is one of the few areas' in Ontario that has experienc- ed an expanding pupil enrolment over the past several years -- such growth resulting from the Bruce Nuclear Power Development. Because of this growth the Bruce ' Board has had to add extensively .to its classroom capacity. Much of the financing of such building projects has been by debenture issues, but the ' rate of provincial grant on debenture repayments has been cut by 12% for 1976. Also, because Of the geographical shape of the - county and the sparse Population in many areas, the ,percentage of budget . spent on • school bus transportation is ond,of the highest in the province.
