The new Ripley and District

opened Sunday afternoon. 'Com-
pletion of the building ends a three'
year effort by the residents • of
:Ripley and Huron to get their own
doctor.
The Kin-Huron, Medical Group,
consisting 'of Doctors, ' Gurbin,
Mathieu, Milne, Tindall and
Woods will be servicing the
medical centre commencing Mon-
day, April 12.
Early in, 1973, the Canadian
Council of Churches (C,C.C.)
approached area minister to see if
it. Could help the Community in any
way. During a meeting between a
C.C.C. representative and mem-
bers of local churches, a letter from
a Montreal doctor, enquiring about
the prospetts of establishing a
medical practice in Ripley, was
read. •
The response to this letter was
positive and a committee consisting
of Reg Moore,. Mr.• and Mrs.-Jack
C. MacDonald', Rev. Kenneth
Rooney and Stewart Needham was
. appointed to look more closely_ at
the matter. Calling itself the
Ripley District Development
Group, it was advised that building
a medical centre would be the best
way to attract a doctor. ,
On meeting with the Department
of Health, the committee learned'
the ministry did not give aid to
build medical centres but would'
guaran, tee to get a doctor if one was
built., The group went on record as
unanimously in favour of .building
the medical centre. :
After the village and township
councils were approached fox
support, a public 'meeting was held
and, a representative '.of the
departinent of health explained
what support could' be expected
'.from them. The majority of the
people were in favour of proceed-
ing with the centre and the two
councils agreed that if $25,000
Could be raised by the committee,
they, would finance, the balance.
A .canvass was made within the
village and surrounding diStrict
and over $30',000,• was collected.
The early plans were completed in
1974 and a' contract signed "with„
contractor Ron Wingfield of Wing-
ham.
Land' for the Medical Centre,
donated ' by lir. John Munn of
Toronto in memory of his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Munn, was
cleared by volunteer help.
The Ripley and District Medical
Centre committee consists of;

Mrs. J. C. MacDonald, treasurer

Auley, John Gamble, Mr. and Mrs.

The study according to Wingham

"I understand it, is 'being
'reviewed at thd present 'time in
Toronto," Mr. Mansell said, "'It
won't be forwarded to our office
until the end Of the month."
Mr. Mansell said earlier this
year he expected to receive the
